Kathleen Mae Flaherty, of Manhattan, New York, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, September 19, 2021. She was 78 years old. A proud, longtime resident of New York City, Kathy was independent and quick with a witty comeback. Born in Newark, New Jersey, to James Flaherty and Gladys Moyer, Kathy lived with her father and stepmother, Jean Schmidt Flaherty, until moving to New York City.
She held many interesting jobs throughout her lifetime, with her longest tenure being the King's County D.A.'s Office. She took great pride in her work there, especially her work with youngsters. Kathy held a great affinity for all things Irish and traveled to Ireland twice with her longtime friend, Laura Lustbader. Kathy always felt at home in Ireland, especially the area where the O'Flaherty family was from. She was an avid animal lover and kept dogs for most of her life. Always willing to take advantage of living in NYC, Kathy loved to attend Broadway shows and plays.
Most of all, Kathy treasured her family and friends, especially her nieces and nephews. She will always be remembered for her sense of humor, her generosity, her wonderful stories, and her New Yorker attitude.
Kathy is survived by her older brother John Flaherty, and his wife Annette. Her younger brother Michael Flaherty, and his wife Barbara. Along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Kathy will be laid to rest at the Church of St. Peter in Belleville, New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to either St. Jude's Children's Hospital (www.stjude.org/donate) or The New York Foundling (https://www.nyfoundling.org/donate-online/). Both of these charities were very near and dear to Kathy's heart.
