Ms. Johnnie Mae "Rabbit" Mayes Obituary

Ms. Johnnie Mae Mayes, age 69, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at the University Hospital in Augusta, GA. She was born on Sunday, October 7, 1951 in Thomson, GA to both the late Beatrice Hill and John Henry Mayes. At an early age, Johnnie Mae accepted Christ into her life as her personal savior and she joined the Saint James AME Church (currently known as Greater St. James AME Church) of Thomson, GA. “Rabbit” as Johnnie Mae was affectionately called, was a dedicated worker at Crider’s Poultry, Inc. for over ten years. She also worked at Thomson Manor Nursing Home (currently known as Thomson Health & Rehabilitation) in Thomson, GA for many years until her health started to fail. Our beloved Johnnie Mae Mayes “Rabbit” will be thought of with a smile and remembered with love. She will forever and always hold a very special place within our hearts. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death a son, Christopher Bouttry; two sisters, Barbara Jean Clemons and Jacqueline “Jackie” Atkins; two brothers, John Henry “Newsome” Mayes, Jr. and James Bernard “Duck” Willingham. Precious memories are left to those who have survived her: four daughters, Valerie Mayes (Keith) Johnson of Clarksville, TN, Erica Dawson, Shauntia Dawson and Mia Steed, all of Thomson, GA; four sons, Steven Mayes, Johnny Dawson, Jr., James Bouttry, all of Thomson, GA and Eric Dawson of Augusta, GA; fourteen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; four sisters, Jeanette Daniels, Joann (Willie, Jr. “Pete”) Booker, all of Thomson, GA, Mary Jane (Raymond) Allen of Richmond, VA and Zelma Mays (Charles) Turner of Hephzibah, GA; five brothers, Robert L. Mays, Love Mays, both of Thomson, GA, Nathaniel (Vickie) Mays of Augusta, GA, Henry Mays of Grand Rapids, MI and Jerry (Gloria) Mays of Covington, GA; a special friend, Johnnie B. Dawson of Thomson, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many other sorrowing friends.
