Ruth Hughes, 71, of Murphy was called to her Heavenly home, Wednesday, September 22, 2021. She was a native of Cherokee County where she had spent most of her life. She did enjoy the several years she lived in Clearwater, Florida but the mountains of North Carolina were always her home. She had worked as a manager for both Dollar General and Walmart for many years. Ruth was a gifted painter who painted ceramics, enjoyed crocheting, and was an avid reader. She was a remarkable woman in all aspects. She was a devoted Nanny and doted over her grandkids constantly. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Julia Lee Hughes and the wife of the late Edward Crockett Walker. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Becky Worley and Christine Worley; and a brother, Bruce Hughes. Surviving are three daughters, Lynn Michales of Asheville, and Gayle Tabor of Murphy, and Kimberly Morrow and husband, Jimmy of Brasstown; a son, Jeffrey Scroggs of Murphy; two brothers, Pete Hughes and wife, Rhonda of Cornelia, Georgia and Bobby Hughes and wife, Loretta of Brasstown; eight grandchildren, Josh Golden and wife, Shandelle, Aaron Tabor and Nikkie Cagle, Garrett Golden, Cody Bowman, Chloe Hitner, Zoey Hitner, Dylan Morrow, and Luke Jenkins; two great-grandchildren, Aaron Tabor Jr. and Nick Cagle with baby Golden on the way. A celebration of life will be held and announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123 or americancancersociety.org. Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy in charge of arrangements.
