Diane Bates, 74, and her husband, Joseph E. Bates, 73, of Morristown, NJ, passed away on September 10, 2021 and September 17, 2021 respectively, shortly after celebrating their 51st wedding anniversary. A Memorial Service will be offered on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at 1:00 pm in the Shook-Farmer Funeral Home, 45 Roseland Avenue, Roseland, NJ 07068, shookfarmer.com. They grew up in New York, moved to Lake Hiawatha and then settled in Morristown. They met as neighbors in Richmond Hill, NY. They enjoyed sunrises, walks on the boardwalk, and ballroom dancing throughout the years. Diane received her degree from Hunter College. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a programmer for Bell Labs in Whippany. She was a FeldenKrais Practitioner and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, aromatherapy, trips to the casino, the Hallmark channel, and traveling. Joseph honorably served in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was the owner and operator of Bates Produce in Morristown. He was a lifelong Jets fan, enjoyed researching stock investments, learning about history, and appreciated being outdoors. Both Joe and Diane also spent many hours playing and laughing with their 3 grandchildren. Predeceased by their parents, Joseph M. Peshler and Margaret Peshler (Osman) and Joseph Bates and Veronica Bates (Harprecht), and siblings, Martin Peshler, Judith Mahoney, and Daniel Cormier. Surviving is their beloved daughter, Jocelyn Bates, and her husband, Matthew Struck; cherished grandchildren, Veronica, Cole, and Piper; dear siblings, Al Peshler, and his wife, Deb, Barbara Carone, and her husband, Ray, Mary Peshler-Morin Hoch, and her husband, Kenny, Donna Cerra, and her husband, Richard, Robert Bates, and his wife, Doreen, Nancy Cormier, Linda Miller, and her husband, Tony, and Robert Mahoney. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in their memory to The FeldenKrais Foundation or Semper Fi and America’s Fund.
