Mrs. Lillian Giles Allen Obituary

Mrs. Lillian Giles Allen was born April 4, 1928 in Savannah, GA to the late Oliver and Maude Dobson Giles. She matriculated through Springfield Elementary School, West Broad Street School and Woodsville High School.

Lillian’s father passed away when she was very young. At the age of seventeen, she met and married Benjamin Allen in the fall of 1944. This union produced four children.

She was a member of First African Baptist Church in Savannah, GA. She worked for 38 years until she retired from National Linen Company in Savannah, GA.

She raised 3 of her sister’s children and one preceded her in death (Beverly Giles) and the others she raised from in fancy through adulthood. They always opened their home to family and friends and they tried to help anyone in need. She moved from her home to her mother’s home and cared for her mother for 10 years until her mother transitioned at the age of 93.

Lillian was always calm, honest, loving and very patient. Her daughter Deborah stated that “In the 67 years that I’ve known her, I’ve never seen her cry.” Her grandchildren would always say that if she had a sandwich, everyone would get a bite and she would still have a bite for herself. Whenever one of the children would say, “I love you, mom” she responded “I love you, too. A bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.”

Although she was diagnosed with cancer, she never complained and always said “I’m not sick, you know. ”It was the cancer that ultimately claimed her life, however, she made it a point to declare, “There’s nothing wrong with me.”

She was a jewel in her family’s crown as well as in her community. She took in other people’s children and treated them and cared for them as her own. She had a reputation for being trustworthy – with money and your heart’s most precious moments.

People think your legacy is your property or how much money you make. They put value on money and possessions. Lillian put value on her family. Her family is her legacy and she remains the glue that holds her family together.

Lillian transitioned on September 16, 2021 at the age of 93. She lived a peaceful life and had a peaceful transition at Candler Hospital in Savannah, GA.

Mrs. Lillian Giles-Allen was preceded in death by: her parents; siblings – Oliver Giles, Jr. of Tampa, FL, Willie Giles of Savannah, GA, Rosella Giles-Wright of Savannah, GA and Naomi Giles-Whitfield of Savannah, GA; two of her children –Mrs. Shirley Ann Allen Brown and Mr. Earl Allen; her husband, Mr. Benjamin Allen, who passed away in 1979 at the age of 53; and two step-grandchildren.

She is survived by three daughters: Vernell Allen-Smiley, Deborah M. Allen-Lewis (Everett Lewis, Jr.) and Pamela Whitfield-Sams (Larry Sams); son Ronald Eric Giles; daughter-in-law Sheila Allen; son-in-law Willie Brown; two stepchildren – Juliet Blount (Rodney Blount) and Carl Hills; sister Elizabeth Giles-Brown of Savannah and brother, Charles Lee Giles of Savannah. She also leaves to cherish her memory and continue her legacy 32 grandchildren, 86 great-grandchildren and 48 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends to linger in her love.

Her famous last words: “Two wrongs don’t make a right. You can’t take a right and make it wrong and you can’t make a wrong a right!”
