Deborah Carter Waycross, Georgia Obituary

Deborah Carter

At what point does one become a mother? Is it when a child and mother lock eyes for the first time, the first feeding, or the first heartbeat after conception? A mother’s love is an unconditional love that never has to be spoken even if she tells you over and over; a love that can span miles and endure years apart. I am so blessed to not only call this woman I am writing about my “Momma” but my best friend. Cancer came knocking on my Momma’s door on Thursday, September 9th, and made its presence known to us on Sunday, September 12th and after a brief fierce fight, not saying she wasn’t in pain prior, but she was so strong we had no clue what was going on inside her body. I can say she won that battle with the Lord by her side in the early morning of September 15th, cancer did not win, the Lord did not allow it, He said, “Come with Me, my daughter, take my hand I will now take care of you and you will no longer have to feel the pains of this world”. So cancer was kicked out, the door slammed shut and another beautiful door opened to show only what one can only imagine of eternal life. Deborah (Debbie) Lynn Carter was born February 18, 1954, in Camp Gordon, Georgia born to Carol Esther Leach and Stephen M. Fenton; in her teen years, she came to call Robert David Leach her father. She was preceded in death by both parents, 3 of her siblings Jeffrey Fenton, Karen Colman, and Lisa Fenton. Debbie is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Duane E. Carter of Waycross, Ga who she loves so much and had a relationship that other should envy. I can also attest there were many “Griswold” family stories to tell about – she is also survived by her loving daughter Kimberly D. Tanner (Jack, husband) of Jacksonville, two grandchildren Mara Walker (spouse Amy), Spencer Walker (Sami, wife) and 3 of the cutest great-grandchildren Liam, Levi & Lani. Her only surviving sibling is Tommy Fenton of Boca Raton, sister-in-law Linda Karle (David & family) of Waycross, a Goddaughter Jackie Picard (Ed & family) and several nieces and nephews. Last, but not least, a best friend, Carolyn Greer (family Erin & Avery) of Douglas, let me say they would sit for hours on the phone and watch their favorite shows (Downton Abby) together and sometimes in complete silence, but they had that time together when they could not be together. She cared deeply for her family, friends, and neighbors. The grandchildren and great-grandbabies were what would always bring a smile to her face no matter how she felt. She did things not out of obligation, but because she loved everyone with her whole heart. She was always the first to offer help. She regularly brought meals or offered help to sick neighbors and brought items to those in need, she would give friends a ride to work, and she gave without expecting anything in return – it’s what made her happy. She taught us that it’s not about having a degree, social status, or money in the bank - what makes you rich is how you love with your heart. Momma, your unconditional love will be missed by many. “She is clothed in Strength and Dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.” Proverbs 31:25 To her Family & Friends, We hope you can join us for a Life Celebration held at Laura S. Walker State Park in Waycross Ga, on Saturday, September 18th from 12 noon - 2 pm at Picnic Shelter #2. **Flowers may be delivered to Laura S. Walker # 2 Group Shelter from 10:30 am to 12 noon.
