Nelma Smith Whitman Moore

Nelma Smith Whitman Moore, 88, of Mayday, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2021. Nelma was born in Terra Ceia, Florida on April 9, 1933, to the late Jesse Prescott Smith and Bessie Mae Terrell Smith. She had worked at McCrory department store and Acosta Sales. Nelma was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and one of the first members of the Echols County Historical Society. Nelma loved her children and Macedonia Baptist Church. Nelma is survived by five children, Janice Whitman Hinkley (Mark), Richard Whitman (Brenda), Joe Ann Whitman Arana (Jorge), Drew Whitman Jr. (Michelle), and Tommy Whitman (Carol); her grandchildren, Steven, Jennifer, Jonathan, Michael, Clay, Clint, Jessica, and Emily; her great grandchildren, Emma, Drew, Smith, Caroline; one sister, B.J. Smith Whitman; and ten nieces and nephews. Nelma was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Drew Whitman Sr., Kenneth Moore, brothers Jack, J.P., Ralph, and sisters Earline Suggs, Eva Nell, Bernice Ivadell, and Vella Mae Smith. Graveside services will be held at 3pm on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. Condolences may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com. Carson McLane Funeral Home

We miss you. My favorite memory of Auntie N involves my Mama(BJ) and her having to start the car with Aunt Nelma’s lipstick case. Car full of kids and a bad starter. The ingenuity of the Smith girls at its best. My love and peace to the cousins. VJ
