Helen Blanche Dieter Obituary

Helen Blanche Shook Erickson Dieter, 101 COLUMBUS, OH – Helen B. Shook Erickson Dieter, 101, of Columbus, passed away Tuesday, September 14th, 2021, at 10:50 a.m. at the Brookdale Assisted Living Center following a brief illness. Born on August 26, 1920, in Youngstown, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Anna Blanche Rhodes Shook. A graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, she married Edward Erickson, who died in 1945 during World War II, leaving Helen with two small children. Following the death of her husband, she went to work as a nurse’s aide at a small hospital in Warren. While there, she met Donald Dieter, whom she married in 1948. After having two more children, Helen became a homemaker until returning to work for Austintown Township Schools, where she retired as cafeteria manager in 1982. Don preceded her in death in 1977. While in the Austintown area, she was very active in her home church, Ohltown United Methodist, where she served as Lay Leader and was Conference representative. She held many positions on the United Methodist Women’s board locally and in the District. Helen continued her activity with the church after coming to the East Liverpool area in 1993 to be nearer to her daughter, Judy. She made this community her home – particularly at the 1st United Methodist Church, where she was very active for many years. In addition to her involvement with the UMW here, Helen was also a part of the Rebekah-Joy Circle, the Naomi Circle, and the Fidelis Sunday School class. She served as secretary of the Administrative Board and was the unofficial “church photographer” for many years, always keeping current on the lives of each and every church member – young and old. Helen was also president of the AARP Chapter #4359 and had belonged to the Triangle Seniors. She was a longtime member of the ROLO group (Remembering Our Loved Ones) at the Dawson Funeral Home. Surviving her are two daughters and two sons: Judith Kidder of East Liverpool, Alice Favret and her husband, James, of Columbus; James Erickson and his wife, Patsy, of Clermont, Florida, and Thomas Dieter of Amesbury, Massachusetts. There are nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was also preceded in death by a great-grandson, Andrew Swain; a son-in-law, William Kidder; along with her siblings, Beatrice Weeks, Lawrence “Bub” Shook, Dorothy Sutley and Charles Shook, and a special sister-in-law, Mary Shook. Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Friday, where the family will be present from 2:00 to 4:00p.m. and from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. Saturday with Pastor Stephen J. Knisely of the church officiating. Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery, followed by a continued time of fellowship at the Dawson Family Center. For those wishing to do so, memorial tributes may take the form of contributions in care of: First United Methodist Church, 200 West 5th Street, East Liverpool, Ohio 43920 or Linworth United Methodist Church, 7070 Bent Tree Blvd, Columbus, Ohio 43235.
