Bill Obituary

William Bahrt died in Sequim, Washington, after a long history of heart disease, cancer, and kidney disease.  He was 88 years old at the time of his death.   Bill was born at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City to Arthur Cornwall Bahrt and Flora Antoinette (Brulé) Bahrt.  During his early years, he lived in New York and Florida.  Later he would live in California, New York, Montana, Utah, Arizona, and Washington State.   After the untimely death of his father in 1939, Bill attended boarding schools until 1949 when he attended and graduated in 1951 from South Pasadena High School in South Pasadena, California.  After a back injury in 1967, he started college at the age of 34 at Grossmont Community College.  He graduated with honors in 1969.  He subsequently received his bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University in 1971 and a master’s degree from Arizona State University in 1973.    He met and married Margery Elizabeth Laws with whom he had six children: Daniel William Diana Louise, Debra Kathleen, Demerise Ann, Danette Mari, and David Arthur.  He later married Janice Marion Wouters with whom he had a daughter, Rachel Antoinette.  Both marriages ended in divorce.  Finally, he married the love of his life, Joyce Abbie Peter on 2 February 1990 in Richland, Washington.   Initially, Bill worked in sales for the better part of 18 years.  After college, he taught at Arizona State University and was the head of the Speech and the Theater Department for Northland Pioneer College in Holbrook, Arizona. He went to work for Arizona Public Service Company at Cholla Power Plant in Joseph City Arizona, and at the Arizona Nuclear Power Project in Wintersburg, Arizona, as a Training Professional.  After a major reduction in force in 1988, he moved to Richland, Washington, where he was employed by the Hanford Nuclear Site as an instructor-trainer until his retirement in 1994. At that time, he and his wife Joyce moved to Sequim, Washington, where they built their “dream home” and settled down to a life of active retirement.   One of Bill’s prime interests over the years has been his love for music which manifested itself in a long-term association and avocation (1950 to 1980) as both an amateur and a professional. Since moving to Sequim, he played the roles of Alfie Doolittle in the PALOA production of “My Fair Lady” in 1995, Horace Vandergelder in the PALOA production of “Hello Dolly” in 1996, and as Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the PALOA production of “ANNIE” in 2001.  In addition, he appeared in several other productions around town including three for the Olympic Theater Arts in Sequim.  After “retiring” from the local stage, he joined and enjoyed active involvement in the “Strait Men’s Barbershop Chorus” where he served as a board member and as Show Chairman for the organization.  He was also a “lighthouse nut” and had some involvement with the New Dungeness Lighthouse here in Sequim.  Bill and Joyce shared equal interest in the Sequim Bay Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where they filled many positions; both individually and as a team. They served two missions for the Church: Church Education Systems mission in San Diego, California, for two years, and a Genealogy Mission at the Worldwide Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah for two years.  Bill is survived by his children, Daniel, Diana, Debra, Danette, David, and Rachel.  He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Joyce, his daughter Demerise, his stepson Neil, and his stepdaughter Kathy.  He is also survived by 6 stepchildren, 19 grandchildren, and 33 great grandchildren.   A Funeral Service was held at the Church of Jesus Christ Later-day Saints in Sequim and he was laid to rest next to his wife, Joyce at Sequim View Cemetery. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the family. (360) 683-5242.
