Alice Van Egdom Obituary

Alice Van Egdom of Lynden passed away at Hospice House in Bellingham on September 13, 2021, at the age of 98, following a stroke. Alice was born in Ferndale, Washington on Mothers’ Day, May 13, 1923 to Willie and Hilda (Swenson) Holm and attended Ferndale schools. On June 28th, 1941 she was wed to William (Bill) Van Egdom, to whom she was married for nearly sixty years. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2001, her brother Fred Holm of Oregon in 1974 and numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law. She is survived by her five children: Richard Van Egdom (Diane) of Bellingham, Larry Van Egdom of Lynden, Kenneth Van Egdom (Connie) of Birch Bay & Arizona, Marlene Marshall (Ron) of Bellingham, and Wilma Charleston (Bill) of Everson, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Alice was a resident of the Lynden area for over 80 years. Family was always her priority; she was a devoted wife and loved being a mother and grandmother. She was skilled at sewing, crocheting and knitting, and was an excellent cook, with her cinnamon rolls and pies being especially loved by everyone. Alice always supported her children in their school and extracurricular activities. The family spent many fun vacations together at their cabin at Birch Bay. Alice was a long-time member of First Reformed Church. She served on the Whatcom County Election board for many years and was a member of the Carpenter’s Union Guild. Her husband played competitive horseshoes and they enjoyed traveling to many tournaments with friends throughout the state and beyond. Alice was a volunteer and board member of Lynden Community Center for many years and loved taking part in activities with her special friends there. She especially enjoyed family gatherings and holidays and was thrilled by each new baby that arrived into the family. Alice’s sweet and supportive presence will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but her effect on our lives will be lasting. A small gathering and graveside service will be held at Monumenta Cemetery on Thursday, September 16, 2021 at 2:30 p.m. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Hospice or Feeding America. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
