Barbara C Kellum West Nyack, New York Obituary

Barbara C Kellum

Barbara C. Kellum had a reprieve from Cancer for twenty two years , before slipping away on 13 Sept. 2017. She is best remembered for her interest in people around her. She had a phenomenal memory for names and family details, which served her well all her life. She will be missed by all who knew her. Barbara was born in Vermont on August 27, 1933 to parents Clifford and Doris Casavant. She was a basket ball player in high school and attended Girls’ State as a delegate. In 1954 she became a registered nurse, graduating from a three year program at Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing in New York City. 17 September 1955 is the date she married 1st Lt. Rotui M Kellum who was a pilot stationed at an Air Defense radar site near St Albans, Vt. The young couple started a family consisting of three boys, William M. and twins Benjamin C. and Bruce R. Kellum. This twenty year Air Force family was stationed in Vermont, South Carolina, England, France and Arizona. The Kellum family moved to West Nyack, New York in 1975, when Rotui was hired by the FAA at Kennedy Air Port. Barbara was the editor of her Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Newsletter, The Echo, for twenty three years. She also organized reunions for her class. She formed a Neighborhood Watch for her neighborhood in W. Nyack and led it for many years. Barbara was a knitting machine and made sweaters for her family and friends. She also knitted dish cloths, which she gave away constantly across the USA and became known as the Johnny Appleseed of dish cloths. Barbara was a dog lover and would keep several of her neighbors’ dogs when their owners had to travel with-out them. This was not a business, but a labor of love. Since her children were located on both coasts, she and Rotui would drive cross country to visit them, while also attending Air Force reunions scattered across the country. This resulted in their having visited all fifty states. Barbara is survived by her husband, their three children, Bill/Elizabeth, Bruce/Ruth, Ben/Jeannie and five grandchildren, Daniel, Matthew, Aaron, Zachary and Faith, two special granddaughters, Alyssa/Michael and Elena and her sister Betty, (Armand) L'Esperance, and brothers William ( Pat) Casavant, Peter (Lois) Casavant, sister-in-law, Marimari Kellum and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was pre deceased by her older sister, Janet Casavant LeTourneau (Dick) in 2004. Services are private Arrangements handled by Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home Inc.
