Maria Rosario Restrepo

Maria Rosario Restrepo March 22, 1933 – September 13, 2021 Maria Rosario Restrepo, affectionally known as Mom, Mum and Charo was born on March 22, 1933 in Madrid, Spain. She is survived by her five children Felipe (Cathy), Patricia Loria (Jack), Nicolas (Marie), David and Daniel (Kate), 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Jose-Luis, predeceased her in 2006. Maria graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where she met Jose-Luis. They married in Madrid, shortly after graduating from Penn, and moved to Medellin, Colombia where they started their family. Maria, Jose-Luis and their three eldest children moved to the United States in November of 1962. Maria worked at the World Bank for several years and taught Spanish and French for many years at the Langley School in McLean, Virginia. McLean was home for the majority of her life. Throughout her life she was an avid tennis player, traveler and sports enthusiast with a particular interest in Real Madrid and all teams and athletes tethered to her beloved Spain. Most importantly she was a wife, mother, friend, companion, teacher and neighbor without peer. Maria lived a life of faith in words and deeds. Her commitment to family and friends was unwavering; she was always there to support, encourage and offer unconditional love. Her legacy and spirit will be carried forward by all who had the good fortune to have shared her journey. Donations in her memory can be made to SOME – So Others Might Eat – www.some.org - an organization she long admired and supported. A funeral mass will be celebrated on September 16th at 11:30 am at St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church in McLean, VA. Burial to follow immediately thereafter at Fairfax Memorial Park in Fairfax, VA. A luncheon reception will follow at St. Luke’s.

When my first son was born and I was so far from my own mother, Charo came and spent an afternoon with Lucas and me. It was one of so many lovely gestures that she did for my family. She will be dearly missed for her kindness and amazing spirit.
