William Robert McAvoy Obituary

William “Bill” R. McAvoy, 94, of North Stonington, CT passed away on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Masonicare at Mystic. He was the husband of the late Betsy (Smith) McAvoy. Born in Norwich, CT on January 24, 1927, he was the son of the late Daniel and Levina (Stott) McAvoy.

Bill served his country proudly while stationed in the South Pacific during WWII in the U.S. Navy. He was also called again to service during the Korean War while he was a part of the Navy Reserves. Following the service, he went on to work for Atlantic Carton and then started his own business, Far Away Farm Lamp Shop, where he was the owner and operator for 45 years. The business still continues to today. Outside of work, Bill enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He served as the Scout Master for the Norwich Boy Scout Troup 1 which was an activity he enjoyed with sons as they grew up. He was also a member of VFW Post 1265. Bill will be missed by his family, friends and all those who knew him.

He leaves his three children; Kathleen Lucas, Michael McAvoy and his wife Barbara and Thomas McAvoy and his wife Carolyn; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; two siblings Elizabeth McAvoy and Hugh McAvoy, several nieces and nephews and his former spouse Roberta Goldman. He was preceded in death by his siblings Edward McAvoy, Levina Crandall, Daniel McAvoy and Thomas Noel McAvoy.

Services will begin with a calling hour for friends and family, to be held on Friday, September 17, 2021 beginning at 12:00pm (Noon) until the time of the service, which be held at 1:00pm at the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St, Westerly, RI. Committal services with military honors will follow at Union Cemetery, N. Stonington, CT, with a reception to follow in Mystic.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in his name to Masonicare at Mystic Hospice, 45 Clara Dr. Mystic, CT 06355; the VFW Post 1265, 160 S. Broad St., Pawcatuck, CT 06379 and the American Cancer Society, 238 W. Town St. Norwich, CT 06360.
