Major Shirley Litherland, age 85, a Manitowoc resident was Promoted to Glory on September 8, 2021 at Edgerton Care Center, Edgerton, WI.

Shirley was born on July 19, 1936 in South Chicago Heights, IL, daughter of the late John and Mary (Bennett) Malek. On June 22, 1957 she married Harry Litherland in Chicago Heights, IL. Shirley and Harry were officers in The Salvation Army for 37 years, serving in many places including St. Paul, MN; Owatonna, MN; St. Cloud, MN; Fargo, ND; Columbia, MO; Cape Girardeau, MO; Sedalia, MO; West Frankfort, IL; Marquette, MI and Manitowoc, WI. After retirement, the couple continued to serve in Marquette, MI; Racine, WI and Ishpeming, MI.

Shirley was a world traveler and enjoyed reminiscing about her travels to Israel, Egypt, Rome, and Poland as well as trips to Alaska and the Grand Canyon. Her favorite scripture reading was Psalm 121.

Survivors include: five children and their spouses: Julie (Tom) McDowell, Cathy (Mike) Himes, Mark Litherland, Emilee Litherland and Timothy Litherland; eight grandchildren: Katie, Austin (Rebeka) and Damon Himes, Erin (Mike) Hudgens, Elizabeth (Spencer) Chapin, Emilee (Jonathan) Jacque, Eden (Timothy) Ray and Grace (Litherland) Barrymore; three great granddaughters: Imogen Chapin, Harlow Chapin, Penelope Himes; one sister: Gloria Carrizales, and two sisters-in-law: Donna Litherland and Merry (Martin) Venn. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.  She was preceded in death by her husband Major Harry Litherland, as well as one grandchild, one great grandchild, one sister: Delores Hede, one sister-in-law: Elenora Litherland, and two brothers-in-law: David Carrizales and Martin Venn.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 17, 2021 at the Pfeffer Funeral Home.  Officiating at the service will be Majors Steven and Christine Merritt.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, September 17, 2021 at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Shirley’s name.
