Michael Luce
WORCESTER-Michael Luce, 53, of Worcester died Sunday, September 5, 2021 at Umass Memorial Medical Center following a period of declining health. He was the son of the late Antone Luce and Elsie (Mortagua) Blanchette. Born in New Bedford, he was raised in South Dartmouth and resided most of his life in the town before relocating to Worcester 6 years ago. Michael graduated from Dartmouth High School and earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from SMU, now UMass, Dartmouth. In his younger days Michael was well known for his martial arts skills. He began karate lessons at the age of 4, and eventually trained under John Almeida's Shoto-Kan Karate School, where Sensei Almeida described him as a natural. The summer he graduated high school, Michael traveled to Taiwan with the US Karate Team to compete for the Asian Cup; he competed in the National AAU/USA Karate Championships in Atlanta, GA; and the International Collegiate Karate Championships in Kobe, Japan where he represented Southeastern Mass University. He was a top contender at these events, winning 3 gold metals, he placed 2nd in Japan, and 5th out of 75 of the world's best competitors in Taiwan. He was also known for his talent in breakdancing and entertained at the Shawmut Bank Christmas parties. Michael was a cancer survivor and participated in the Walk For Life fundraiser for many years. He was a people person, always willing to help people, a trait he was known for right up until his last days. His career included manager positions at local companies such as Acushnet Fish, Hygrade and IQF Custom Packing, Inc. He also worked as a CAD Engineer for Fire Systems Inc. His family includes his daughter, Chelsey Luce and her fiancé, Brad Santos of New Bedford; 2 step-daughters, Natasha Carvalho and Nathalie Zambrano, to whom he was especially close; his close friend, Christopher Smith of Worcester; his brother, Bruce Lewis of New Bedford; his sisters, Rosemary Head of New Bedford, Diane Machado and her husband, Robert of Dartmouth; Cheryl Barrett and her husband, Charles of Dartmouth, Sandra Hibbert and her husband, Todd of W. Wareham and Tamara Luce of New Bedford; 2 grandchildren, Hunter Santos and Harper Santos; numerous nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Robert Luce, Elaine Gendreau and Karen DeMello. I first met Mike and his family while working at Acushnet Fish in the late 70’s early 80’s. He always impressed me with his martial arts skills. My condolences to his family during this difficult time. 🙏🙏🙏
