Janice R. Hanson, age 81, of Clear Lake, SD passed away Saturday, September 11, 2021 at the Avera Prince of Peace Nursing Home in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, September 19, 2021 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Clear Lake. Visitation will be 5 - 7 p.m. Saturday, September 18, 2021 at the Houseman Funeral Home in Clear Lake, SD and will resume Sunday one hour prior to the service at the church. Janice Rose (Begalka) Hanson was born to Fred and Rose (Jeitz) Begalka on June 29, 1940, in Estelline, SD. She was baptized at and attended Sunday School and confirmed at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hidewood Township, Deuel County. She attended rural grade school in Deuel County and graduated with honors from Estelline High School, class of 1958. She then went on to attend Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls, SD. Janice worked an office job for a short time at South Dakota State University until a job opened at Brookings International Life. Janice was united in marriage to Eldon D. Brandsrud on May 1, 1960. Three children were born to this union: Gregory, Douglas, and Donna. During this union, she worked a variety of jobs. While living in Madison, SD she was employed at F & M Oil Company in Brookings, SD. They later moved to Johnsonville north of Brookings where she was a cook for the interstate crew and other while I-29 was being built in the area. She also worked as a nursing assistant at Estelline Hospital. Later, she was an after-hours dispatcher for the Deuel County Sheriff's Department from the old jail house residence on the courthouse lawn. She also worked as a Study Hall supervisor at Clear Lake High School. She married Donald D. Hanson on December 11, 1974 and was blessed with 9 step-children. Their ages ranged from 5 years to 15 years. For the first several years of their marriage she was a stay-at-home mother for 12 children. She later joined Don in selling AAL Insurance as a local Representative. She then received her District Representative License as well as FIC. She made a career change about 1992 and was employed at Deuel County Good Samaritan Society for 25 years. She started as an office assistant and later worked as a C.N.A. and restorative aide. The last two years, prior to retirement, she was a universal worker a the Hidewood Estates Senior Living. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Clear Lake where she was a member of the Ladies Aid and previously assisted with summer Bible School and sang in the choir. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Hospital and Home Auxiliary. Throughout her 44 years of marriage to Don she ran a well-organized household. Much gardening was done, with the help of the kids. Much canning, freezing, cooking, and baking, not to mention laundry was done. She enjoyed traveling and the yearly family camping trips with all the children were always an adventure. She and Don also enjoyed many trips. Most memorable was their trip around the world in 1975 and traveled to the cities of Tokyo, Bangkok, Delhi, Bombay, Tel Aviv, Athens and Copenhagen. Her favorite past times included her flower gardens and organizing family picture books. She also loved to decorate her home for the holidays, Christmas being her favorite. Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Gregory (Sue) Brandsrud, Watertown, SD, Douglas (Tracy) Brandsrud, Henry, SD and Donna (Jeff) Sebesta, Sioux Falls, SD; Julie (Brian) Jacobsen, Lake Norden, SD, Jane (Steve) Naylor, Pierre, SD, Dan (Jolene) Hanson, Sioux Falls, SD, Dawn (Mark Smith) Rang, Sioux Falls, SD, Kurt Hanson, Maple Grove, MN, Kent Hanson, Windsor, Co, Roy Hanson, Garretson, SD, Royal (Jeanette) Hanson, Sioux Falls, SD and Steve (Katie) Solem, Rogers, MN; 37 grandchildren: Samantha (Chad) Oshsendorf, Ben Brandsrud, Abbi (Jamie) Jordan, Brandi Jo Brandsrud, Justin (Brandi Kate) Brandsrud, Ashlyn (James) Palensky, Aimee Sebesta, Eric Sebesta, Chris (Kelly) Evjen, Becky (Dayton) Nuttbrock, Jordan Hoch, Alicia (Chris) Erikson, Jeff (Courtney) Sebesta, Brooks, Bart (Jeni) and Barry Jacobsen, Emily (David) Franks-Naylor, Bryant (Whitney) and Riley Naylor, Cole and Cylie Hanson, Trisha (Dan) Pusch, Jessica (Sam) Freng, Justin Halsne, Gunar Rang, Grant (Chelsea) and Logan Hanson, Jordan and Skylar Hanson, Dexter, Tyler and Courtney Hanson, Austin (Taylor), Alek and Andrew Hanson and Ben and Melissa Solem; 43 Great-Grandchildren, sister, Joyce Miller, Panama City, FL; brother-in-law, David Krause, Bemis, SD and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Donald Hanson; stepson, Rodney Hanson; parents, Frederick and Rose Begalka; in-laws, Roy and Edna Hanson, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
