Franklin Delano Brooks, 87, and Mary Louise Brooks, 84, both of Windsor, Missouri, enjoyed 66 blessed years of marriage. Frank passed into the loving arms of Jesus on Monday, September 13, 2021, followed three days later by Mary Lou on Thursday, September 16, 2021. Frank was born January 18, 1934, in Knob Noster, Mo., the son of William Elza Brooks and Mattie Norris (McFarland) Brooks. Mary Lou (Swisher) was born July 3, 1937, in Windsor, the daughter of James Ulysses Swisher and Mable Margaret (Wilborn) Swisher. On August 24, 1955, they were married, making their home in Windsor. Frank grew up in Windsor and attended school there until moving to Marshall, Mo., in High School. There he participated on the football and track team. He moved back to Windsor his senior year where he made his famous shoestring tackle for the Windsor Greyhounds. Following high school, he served in the United States Navy at the end of the Korean War from 1952-1956. He was a life-long carpenter, working on many and varied projects over the years. He never missed a day of work and gave his all on every job. He accumulated 35 years with JE Dunn Construction in Kansas City as a union carpenter. He worked in heavy construction on housing additions, and projects requiring special engineering and equipment for safety including bridges, high-rise buildings, and projects at Central Missouri State University (now UCM), Whiteman Air Force Base, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Faithfully making dinner with his family a priority, he often continued working into the evening hours helping friends, neighbors, or family with projects, working on cars or anything that needed to be fixed. On the family farm, he raised cattle, built a milk barn to milk cows, and stayed busy with projects, even roofing his own home at the age of 80. He was quick to help anyone in need and his kind, caring, generous and humble nature was an example to all who knew him. Mary Lou was also a graduate of Windsor High School. She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed staying home with their 5 children in their growing-up years. She occasionally did babysitting and later worked for Dr. William Crow. She also worked as a paraprofessional at school in Windsor and taught aerobics at the Windsor Senior Center for 15 years. She enjoyed painting, quilting, reading, and collecting antiques. She could play the piano by ear, kept a garden, and cooked many meals for her family over the years. Frank and Mary Lou were members of the First Baptist Church, Windsor, and Mary Lou helped with Vacation Bible School and the GA program. Mary Lou had a beautiful smile and her pleasant nature and the way she cared for her family and those around her will not be forgotten. Frank and Mary Lou prayed together on their wedding night that God would bless them with a large family. Here is their answered prayer: 5 children, Donita Crow (Marvin), Lee’s Summit, Mo., Lynnette Foster (Bill), Nevada, Mo., Delaina Bullock (Howard), Clinton, Mo., Layne Brooks (Sharon), Windsor, Mo., and LaDonna Briggs (Brian), Windsor, Mo.; 16 grandchildren, Ryan Ellis (Lynn), Kristen Johnson (Andrew), Kayla Kline (Nyle), Lauren VanLiew (Sean), Kellan Foster (Megan), Kara Reed (Justin), Sydnea Smith (Chris), Kendel Osburn (Justin), Donnie Bullock (Jackie), Emma Brooks, Rhason Brooks, Dala Brooks, Eldon Brooks, Camden Briggs (Courtney), Britnea Monaco (Ben), and Mason Briggs; 23 great-grandchildren, Violet, Annen, Ori, Ellery, Katara, Everly, Ava, Maddux, Cruz, Jaxon, Alyssa, Bethany, Isabelle, Hannah, Jake, Grey, Howie, Josie, Rawle, Raelyn, Rhet, Franki Lou, Rocco, and 2 great-grandchildren on the way. In addition to their children and grandchildren, survivors also include Frank’s brother, Herb Brooks, Kansas City, Mo. and 2 step-sisters, Iona Dickey, and Dorothy Winney (Lee); Mary Lou’s sister-in-law, Bonnie Swisher; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. They were preceded in death by their parents; a grandson, Ryan Crow; Frank’s step-mother, Edith Brooks; brother, Cecil Eldon Brooks and wife Eula; 2 sisters, Rilletta Cooper and husband Charles and Thelma Bjolstad and husband Ted; sister-in-law, Mary Brooks; step-sister, Judy Blalock; and Mary Lou’s brother James E. Swisher and wife Mae Marie. A joint funeral service for Frank and Mary Lou will be held 4:00 p.m., Friday, September 24, 2021, at the First Baptist Church, Windsor, with Pastor Ken Martin and Pastor Mike Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Laurel Oak Cemetery, Windsor. The family will receive friends before the service at the church from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and masks are recommended. A trade school scholarship is being established in their memory and contributions may be made to the Windsor High School Master Scholarship Endowment Fund (WHS MSEF) in care of the funeral home.
