In 1957, she graduated from Sequim High School and then attended Beauty School in Seattle. On April 30, 1960, Barbara married her best friend and lifetime partner Norman “Bruce” Fernie and settled on the Fernie Family Farm for most of their lives together. Barbara worked in food services for Sequim Schools for 30 years. Much of that time as the head cook at Sequim High School. After retiring, students would continue to visit her. Barbara was a dedicated caregiver for many years for tribal member Michael Cusack and in 2009, she was named the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Center’s Volunteer of the year, an honor she proudly held. She and husband Bruce were Grand Pioneers in 2019 for the Sequim Irrigation Festival. Barbara was a kind, caring and loving person; and never met anyone that was not an immediate friend for life. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Mary Edgington; grandparents Roy and Pearl King and her faithful companion of 14 years, her dog Nellie. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2021, at 12:00 PM at Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel. A luncheon reception will immediately follow at the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Center.
