William Taylor Railton Sr. Obituary

On September 10, 2021, William Taylor Railton Sr., 87, loving husband of the late Dorothy Alta (Baehm) Railton, passed away in his Naples, Florida home surrounded by his children. Taylor is survived by his three children daughter Debbie Railton of Cary, NC, daughter Liz Railton (Peter Gaucher) of Cary, NC and son Bill Railton (Courtney) of Scituate, MA. He also leaves behind six grandchildren and two great grandchildren who were his absolute pride and joy; Taylor Eschbach (Rachael), Ryan Gaucher (Joanna Smith), Annie Gaucher, Will Railton, Caroline Railton, Tess Railton, and Casey and Charlotte Eschbach. Taylor is also survived by his loving and devoted partner Kathy Bergren.

Taylor was born in Montreal Canada and moved to Schenectady NY when he was 15 years of age. He graduated from Mont Pleasant High School and Hartwick College.  He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Darmstadt Germany.  Taylor married his high school sweetheart, Dotty, and they enjoyed 44 wonderful years together. Taylor was a dedicated and loving father and extraordinary grandfather. He traveled thousands of miles to be at athletic, artistic and scholastic events in order to celebrate his grandchildren; they never had a bigger cheerleader than their grandpa.

Taylor was a sports enthusiast, as a player and a fan. He fulfilled his lifelong dream of seeing a hockey game in every NHL rink in 2000, traveling 16,384 miles in his Ford Taurus.  His favorite teams were the Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Union Dutchmen. Known as “Slapshot” to his golf buddies, he made a hole in one at his home course, Stonebridge Country Club, in 2018.

Taylor began playing ice hockey at the age of five on outdoor rinks in Canada. He played goalie and forward before hanging up his jersey for a whistle. A natural and inspirational coach he touched the lives of more young athletes than he could count. The highlight of his volunteer coaching career was leading the 1985-86 Conestoga Pioneers ice hockey team to an undefeated season and state championship.

Taylor enjoyed a successful career in the insurance industry, retiring after 33 years with Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland. Taylor had a positive outlook on life and when asked how he was often replied “if I was doing any better, I’d be twins”. His beautiful blue eyes had a mischievous sparkle, and his laugh filled the room. He was a generous and loyal friend and will be missed by all who knew him.  Taylor will be waiting, for those who come behind him, with a perfect VO Manhattan up with a twist.
