CHEVY CHASE, MD -- Virginia Ann (Reed) Harper passed away at the age of 87, at ManorCare Health Services Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland on September 11, 2021. She was born on September 4, 1934, in Cumberland, to Estel Wilson Reed, Sr. and Margarite Catherine (Hogan) Reed. She was the eldest of five siblings, and was preceded in death by Edward Reed, Patricia Knight, Estel Reed, and Joseph Reed. As a child, she was raised at St Patrick’s Catholic Church, and later became a parishioner of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She was a graduate of Allegany High School, and worked at several department stores in Washington, D.C., including Lansburgh’s and Crosby Shoe Store. For over a decade, she worked as a receptionist at several beauty salons in Cumberland and LaVale, including Hairport and Classic Hair. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed crafting. She had a passion and talent for interior design. She enjoyed various trips, concerts, and loved going to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. to see theatre. She was known for her quick wit and her sense of style. She is survived by four children and their partners: Cathy Shaffer and Kenny (deceased) of Mt. Savage; Herbert VanFleet and Dee of Moseley, VA; Michael VanFleet of Ocean City; and Brian VanFleet and Joe Stoshak of Washington, D.C. She is also survived by five grandchildren that gave her the title “G.G.”: Jennifer Wright Mckenzie of Mt Savage; Kelly Wright and Matt Nelson of Ocean City; Justin VanFleet and Fabian Bernal of Bellport, NY; Ryan VanFleet of New York, NY; and Seth VanFleet and Melissa of Ellicott City. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Friday, September 17, 2021, from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. Facemasks will be required. An outdoor funeral service will follow at Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Cemetery at 4:30 pm, where she will be interred.
