Obituary

ORANGE- Edith Murray Mock of Orange died peacefully on September 9th at Hospice of the Fisher Home in Amherst surrounded by her family.

Affectionately known as Murray, she claimed she was not artistic; however, her love of braiding rugs and arranging flowers told a different story, as did her legacy of weaving connections among people and performing acts of kindness and generosity within her community.

She was the beloved wife of the late Frederick Mock, loving mother of Kate Hart of Deerfield (married to Mark Hart), David Mock of Rockport (married to Beth Mock), and Steve Mock of Needham (married to Dori Mock), proud grandmother of Chris Mock, Erin Mock, Devin Mock, Sam Hart, Annie Hart, Lauren Mock and Audrey Mock, proud great-grandmother of Kaikoa Birtodaso, Keola Simao and Makaio Simao, and big sister of Crissey Smith of Buena Vista, Colorado.

Murray was raised in West Hartford, CT, but made her life in Orange.  After graduating from Mount Holyoke College and The Hartford Hospital School of Nursing, she met the love of her life, Fred Mock.  Shortly after marrying, they moved to Temple Road where Murray and Fred spent 50+ years together raising their family on their 60-acre homestead near the Johnson farm.

Murray was not a person easily forgotten.  Over the years, former students regularly approached her, thanking her for her kindness as their Orange elementary school nurse in the 70’s and 80’s.

One of Murray’s proudest achievements was assisting her husband in starting a local home heating company, Mock’s Fuel and Service.  Murray and Fred enjoyed serving their local community as dedicated business partners.  They strived to help Orange live up to its reputation as “the friendly town.”

Murray put her faith-based commitment to social justice into action in many ways.  She served as chair of her church mission committee.  Under her direction, the Community Church of North Orange and Tully carried out mission projects aimed at improving life for the local, national and global community.  Additionally, Murray was a volunteer with the Shine Program, providing counseling on health insurance matters for elders.  She received the Governor’s award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 1999.  There is nothing Murray would have liked more than to see a world in which all people would be treated justly, with respect, dignity and compassion.

Murray loved hosting birthdays, holidays, bridge clubs and book clubs in her home over the years.  Family and friends would invariably leave these events uplifted, well fed, and with an increased sense of belonging.  Finally, three years ago, Murray relinquished her hosting and cooking duties and allowed her caregiver, Ezinne, to prepare wonderful meals for her.  The resilience and close bond of this pair allowed them to weather the COVID-19 pandemic successfully.

Murray’s children would like to thank friends, family and the community for their support in the past seven years since Fred’s death.  Life without Fred became tolerable, even pleasurable with your caring gestures.

Murray, a lover of music, could frequently be heard singing the last line of a song commissioned to be written for Fred’s 75th birthday, “At the end of the day it’s all about family and friends.”

A private memorial service will be held at the Community Church of North Orange and Tully.  The service will be viewable on zoom.  Those wishing to watch the service can access the link by going to the church’s website at: https://ccnot.com.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Community Church of North Orange and Tully or Heifer International, one of Murray’s favorite charities.  Donations for both organizations may be made online at https://ccnot.com/murrays-page or mailed to the Community Church of North Orange and Tully, 48 Main St, Orange, MA 01364.

Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange, is assisting the family.
