Eldon Johnstone

JOHNSTONE, Eldon Edward born September 19, 1938 – September 8, 2021 aged 82 years

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a highly admired Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and Friend on Sept 8, 2021.

Eldon was predeceased by his Parents John Edward and Lorraine Gwendolyn Johnstone, Sister Ruby Maniel, and son Brent Eldon Johnstone.

Eldon was born Sept 19, 1938 in the RM of Hillsburg to John and Lorraine Johnstone where he was raised on a farm and learned about working hard for a living at a young age. He attended Bield School up until grade 8 when he left to go to work for the surrounding neighbours thrashing and whatever was needed to make money to help the family farm. Eldon went on to work with Highways Depart, Roblin Forest Products, and Town of Roblin where he became a skilled equipment operator.

In Oct.1959, Eldon married Gladys McKay and together they raised 5 children. Karen (Mark) Eger of Watson, SK; Brent(deceased); David (Shauna) Johnstone of Stony Plain, AB; Myrna (Andy) Galay of Strathmore, AB; and Beverly (James) Satterwhite of Vancouver, Washington, USA. He was blessed with 11 Grandchildren, and 11 Great Grandchildren.

In 1966, Eldon bought his first backhoe and started Johnstone Excavating, installing water works and sewer in the Roblin area. He became very well known for his work and developed many friendships over the years.

Eldon and Gladys bought their first piece of land 1 mile east of Roblin in 1968, where Eldon built a beautiful home for his family. He slowly started building a herd of cattle and a few horses for the kids before purchasing 3 quarters of land east of Bield from his uncle. He continued growing the cow calf herd (as well as the horses) over the years and became well known for his exceptional knowledge and production of cattle all while operating his excavating business and being a great Husband and Father.

Eldon also made a point of being involved in the community, both Roblin and Bield. Through the years he held positions as a 4-H leader; Director for the Roblin AG Society and Bield Community Centre as well as MB Wheat Pool. He volunteered driving his team of horses that he was always so proud of in the Roblin parade carrying the Roblin Ag Society Banner. It was a true honor for him, in particular, Roblin’s 100th Anniversary parade where he also celebrated the Johnstone family being a part of Roblin for the full 100 years and having his sister Ruby and Brother Blaine and Sister-in-law Elaine ride in the wagon.

When Eldon decided he had enough of the Excavating business, they sold their property by Roblin and moved east of Bield and once again worked hard at setting up a house and ranch as his retirement. He loved raising his cattle and working with his horses. He was in his happy place when out working among them.

Once again, he developed many friends as he took part in wagon and sleigh rides with his teams in the Riding Mountains. No matter the season, he was raring to go to the park to meet with his friends. They were also some of his happiest times with his family, taking them on a sleigh ride or through the fields in the wagon.

Eldon will be missed for his love of his family, patience, wisdom, integrity and friendship.

Memorial service will be announced at a later time for family and friends. Pastor Heath Butler will officiate.

Nairn-Chyz-Wolkowski Funeral services will be handling funeral arrangements.
