Camp Horton

Camp Roland Horton passed away peacefully on September 6, 2021 at his home in Lees Summit, Missouri, surrounded by his wife and children. 

He was born in Pittsboro, North Carolina on May 1, 1936, to David Edward and Sadie Norwood Horton. He was the youngest of seven children. 

“Brownie” attended Horton High School, where he excelled in several sports and was very popular, smart and outgoing. In 1954, Camp graduated from Horton High School and began working as a mail carrier for the University Of North Carolina Chapel Hill and Gould’s Flower Farm, Pittsboro NC.

Camp joined the Air Force in 1955 and served as a Inventory Management Supervisor from 1955-1981. During his 26 years in the military, he served with excellence and achieved the rank of Master Sergeant.

While stationed at Steward AFB, NY he met and married the greatest joy of his life, his wife Maxine or “Rig” (as he lovingly called her) in Spring Valley, New York on May 14, 1960. From that union came the pride of his life, their seven children.

After retirement from the military, Camp worked for the Shreveport Fire Department, in Shreveport, LA., where he managed the inventory and supplies for the fire department and police academy. Camp retired in 1985, but is still remembered, respected, and appreciated for his personality and the quality of his work to this day.

Camp loved the Lord and loved serving the Lord. He served as a Deacon at Stonewall Baptist Church in Bossier City, LA from 1981-85, a Deacon at Shiloh Baptist in Orlando FL., and was a faithful member of Bannister Road Baptist Church from 2005 to the present where he served in the Men’s Chorus.

Over the years, Camp’s favorite hobbies included attending his kids games, playing softball, and bowling. From his youth until the age of 83, working out in a gym or at home was always a top priority to him.

Camp will be lovingly remembered for his steadfast love and devotion to his wife and children, his deep connection to his home town family, his determination to give a 100% to what ever he was tasked to do, his love for people and for his big bright beautiful smile. What a legacy of love, and what a blessing he has been to all that have known him.

Camp was preceded in death by his parents: David and Sadie Horton; his sister: Elsie Mae Horton Lynn; and brothers: Gladys Horton, James Horton, David Horton Jr, and Joseph Horton.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife: Maxine Horton; his children: Vee Smith, Dianna (David) Whittaker, Anthony Horton, Antonio (Monica) Horton, Donald Horton, Marcus Horton, and David Horton;  his brother: Floyd W Horton, 21 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, one great-great step grandchild; and a host of very special nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and his Bannister Road Baptist Church Family.
