Charles F. Bergeron Obituary

Charles Bergeron, of Saco, left on the ultimate fishing trip Sept 3, 2021. If you know Charlie, you have heard his stories many times and also benefited from his ability to fix anything - boats, cars, motorcycles, lawnmowers, snowblowers, microwaves, and even nuclear reactors. Born in Worcester, MA, on May 5th, 1945, to Mary and Hector Bergeron, Charles spent his formative years with his 4 brothers making mischief and never getting caught (or so the story goes)... They summered in Camp Ellis every year, and it is here he met many of his life-long friends (you know who you are). Charles began working at a very young age, starting his first internship at Clark University while he was in high school. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and made a career in the powerful and controversial field of nuclear energy. Submarines and power plants all over the world became the setting for many of Charles’ adventures and stories during his time at Stone & Webster, Grove Engineering, Marathon Consulting, and Saco Bay Consulting. He was most proud of his work with the Atomic Energy Commission as a Bettis Technical Advisor / Safety Officer. An avid fisherman, Charles made his biggest catch in the summer of 69. He met a French-Canadian girl, Nicole Latulippe, on the sands of Old Orchard Beach, and knew right away that he wanted to marry her. Together for 50 years, they raised 3 girls, Sarah Bergeron, Charlene Sachlikidis, and Catherine Bergeron, who all share Charles’ sense of curiosity and adventure. Summers were especially full of time together, taking the boat out, fishing, and exploring the islands. Charles and Nicole traveled to Florida in their trailer often and even across the country to California, then across the seas to Borneo and Australia. During these travels, Charles welcomed a son-in-law and fishing buddy, Nik Sachlikidis, to the family. Charles very much enjoyed the entertainment and joy brought by his granddaughter, Isabella. Charles’ large extended family now spreads across the US, Canada, Australia, and the islands of the Caribbean. Charles loved his family very much. Charlie’s many friends are the cherished characters of many of his stories. With each telling the fish get larger, deer become moose, clams more numerous, and parties last longer, but all the stories are true. Afternoon spins, sometimes on his motorcycle, to the marina and Camp Ellis to meet his friends and have a drink always brought Charlie home with a smile. Charlie’s ability to fix a boat made him the friend to have, but his compassion, loyalty, and blunt honesty made him the friend to keep. We will be planning a memorial flotilla and a celebration of life for Charles next summer. Please join us to share your favorite stories of Charles and enjoy life the way Charles enjoyed it. He loved life, he loved people, and we loved him and always will. Please make donations in Charles memory to: Gosnell Memorial Hospice House - who took such good care of Charlie in his last days Neighborhood Bikeworks in Philadelphia Children’s Cancer Research Fund
