Herman Schneider

The family writes -- Herman Schneider, 97, US Army veteran, and resident of West Orange, NJ, died on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at lnglemoor Rehabilitation and Care Center in Livingston, NJ. Mr. Schneider was born in Bergenfield, NJ in 1923 and raised in Jersey City. A self-made and successful businessman who grew up in the Great Depression, he also served bravely during World War II as a Private CE in the US Army's Company "A" 294th Engineer Combat Battalion, arriving in Europe in January, 1944 and fighting in battles in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged in December, 1945, returned to NJ and earned a degree in Business from Columbia University. He then settled in Passaic and later founded and ran a successful shipping company called Grand Trucking in Bloomfield. After he retired, he moved to West Orange to be closer to his brother, Dr. David Schneider, and his family. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Evelyn Schneider (nee Ungerleider); his niece, Dr. Rhonda Schneider and her husband, Dr. Mark Popkin; his nephew, Or. Andrew Schneider and his wife, Julie; his niece, Alison Schneider and her husband, Richard Avidon; and his grand nieces and nephews, David Popkin; Daniel, Michael, Alexandra, and Samuel Schneider; and Hannah and Isabel Avidon. Donations in Mr. Schneider's memory may be made to the South Mountain Conservancy at Somocon.org A private memorial service will be held for the immediate family.
