Charles S. McGuire Obituary

Charles Stevens (“Steve”) McGuire passed away peacefully at home on September 8th after a prolonged battle with Parkinson’s. Steve was born on October 11, 1932 in his aunt’s house in Ottumwa, Iowa. He was the first of two sons born to Russell (“Mac”) and Evelyn (“Pinky”) McGuire and grew up in the small town of Garden Grove in southern Iowa. After graduating from Garden Grove High School, Steve spent a year in Marion, Alabama at Marion Military Academy before enrolling in the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland where he studied engineering. Leaving the Naval Academy after three years, Steve elected to commission as an officer in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Alexandria, VA, San Jose, CA and Germany. Prior to serving in the Army, however, Steve enrolled at New York University to complete his engineering degree. Following his military service, Steve moved his family to Boston to work as an engineer at Polaroid Corporation. While at Polaroid, Steve enrolled at Suffolk University Law School and completed his law degree in 1963. Following working as a patent attorney at Polaroid and later at Singer Link Aviation in Binghamton, Steve opened a private law practice in Syracuse where two of his children eventually joined him in the practice of law. A classical music aficionado, Steve was a long time season ticket holder to the Syracuse Symphony, which he always enjoyed. On the sports side of things, Steve enjoyed watching his Chicago Cubs baseball team and was lucky enough to witness their 2016 World Series championship (the Cubs did not win any other championships since his 1932 birth!!). Travel was another passion and Steve enjoyed many years “wintering” with his wife, Ann, in Grand Cayman, where they had a condominium on Seven Mile Beach and had frequent family and friends visiting throughout the winter months. Predeceased by parents, “Mac” and “Pinky” and always cherished younger brother, Michael, Steve is survived by his wife, Ann McGuire (Manlius); children, Frank McGuire (Elizabeth) of Hernando, FL, Sally Matics (Ron) of Toms River, NJ, Mary McGuire of Honeoye Falls, NY, Martha Kvaltine (Mark) of Binghamton, Katie McGuire (PJ Milianes) of Macedon, NY, and George McGuire (Tanya) of Jamesville; his step-children, Melissa Chamberlain (Bill) of Memphis, NY, and Mark Lockrow (Chris) of Weedsport, NY, as well as sister-in-law, LuLu McGuire(Lakeland, FL); niece, Shelly McGuire (Sarasota, FL); nephew, Shane (Rene) McGuire (Tampa); 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Hospice of CNY who provided Steve with exceptional care. Calling hours will be from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Saturday at Newell-Fay Manlius Chapel, 8171 Cazenovia Rd, Manlius immediately followed at 11 am by a memorial service. Contributions may be made to Hospice of CNY, 990 7th North St, Liverpool, NY 13088.
