CHARLOTTE, NC Mrs. Mary Kathryn “Katie” Sparrow Hedrick, 35, of Charlotte, NC succumbed to a brief but courageous battle with cancer on September 5, 2021 at Atrium Main, Charlotte. Daughter of Alan and Marcia Sparrow of Belmont, Katie attended Gaston County Schools, was a member of South Point High School class of 2004 where she was senior class president, member of Beta club, Honors chorus and a varsity cheerleader. Also, voted Most Popular superlative. She was the recipient of the 2004 Michael A. DeMayo scholarship winner in Essay Competition & 2004 North/South Carolina CAP Council Scholarship in Essay Contest. She was crowned 2001 Miss Teen Mecklenburg County & 2002 Teen Miss Charlotte USA. She graduated from NCSU Cum Laude in 2008, majoring in communications with a minor in journalism. She was member of Lambda Pi Eta, National Honor Society & Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority where she served as the 2005 & 2006 art chair designing and painting the winning banner for Sigma Chi Derby Days. She excelled in her job as a Communications Specialist with the City of Charlotte. She and her family were active with the Moments of Hope Ministry, Charlotte. In addition to her parents, Katie is survived by her husband, Miles; twin daughters, Olivia and Eliza Hedrick; brother, Travis Groner of Charlotte; mother-in-law, Kim Hedrick of Belmont; father-in-law, Dennis Paysour of Bessemer City, NC; special niece, Morgan Groner; beloved fur baby, Lily Grace. She was preceded in death by grandparents, Charlie & Mary Sparrow and Bob & Nell Miller. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be conducted by Pastor David Chadwick and Rev. Joe Lawing at 2:00 PM Saturday September 18, 2021 at City Church, 3100 City Church St. Gastonia, NC 28056. The service will be livestreamed and will be available by logging on to www.mcleanfuneral.com. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 PM Saturday in the City Church Sanctuary.
