James Brian Martins, MD, of Northbrook passed away suddenly on September 2, 2021 at the age of 77. Born in Chicago to the late Arlyne Schuett and James K. Martins, he was the first born of three children. Beloved husband of Sylvia Martins for 55 years. Loving father of Dr. David (Jill Swiencicki) Martins and Kimberly Bryant Martins. Proud grandfather of William, Eleanor, Knox and Kai. A graduate of North Park College, he completed medical school at University of Illinois. After further training in cardiology at the University of Iowa, he practiced medicine and mentored residents and fellows there for 45 years. A member of the Christian Medical and Dental Association and Gideons International, he traveled with Sylvia on medical teaching missions in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Poland and China. After moving back to Chicago from Iowa City, James pursued his life-long love of music by singing with the Chicago Mastersingers and attending Chicago Symphony Orchestra concerts. A lover of scripture, he was an active member of Northbrook Covenant Church and he and his wife hosted a weekly Bible study in their home for nearly 50 years. Memorial Service will be held Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 12:00pm at Northbrook Covenant Church, 2737 Techny Road, Northbrook.
