Alex Sepkus

Aleksandras (Alex) Sepkus, of Ossining died September 5, 2021 at the age of 67. Born in Lithuania on March 24, 1954, he was the son of Valerijonas and Jania Zabielskaite Sepkus.

A well-known jewelry designer, he was “a profoundly talented artist and a long-standing pillar of the COUTURE community”.

In Lithuania, Sepkus studied industrial design with the intention of following his father’s footsteps and becoming an architect. After some consideration, he determined that architecture was too limiting for his design passion. Growing up under communism, Alex was unable to work with any sort of precious metals since it was illegal to work with gold in the Soviet Union. With such limited material to work with, he focused mainly on engraved stones, carved ivory, and enamel paintings.

Alex describes the intricate detail work in his jewelry as universal with a focus on basic forms, structures and textures. I stopped making sketches years ago, he said. I imagine the piece I want to make in my head, and the hands work by themselves. Sometimes I get surprised at what comes out.

Alex was “was extraordinarily proud of his heritage and was deeply committed to carrying on its traditions.”

“A man of faith, Alex was a founding member of the Sleepy Hollow Schola Cantorum in Westchester, NY”. “Along with his wife, Dangė, Alex maintained strong ties to the Lithuanian community both personally and professionally.

An excerpt from the Remnant Newspaper describes Alex as one of those gentlemen whose opinion mattered because of the great respect in which we all held him -- a respect he had certainly earned over the course of his storied life as an immigrant from Lithuania who became a world-class artisan in New York City. If Alex disagreed with something you were doing, you’d do well to reevaluate what you were doing. This is the kind of man he was. He spoke his mind in charity and in truth, which made him the very best of friends. Alex supported many of us from behind the scenes and in so many different ways, but one personal connection many Remnant followers have to Alex Šepkus is that he, as a renowned jeweler by trade, is the man who designed our Sacred Heart lapel pin worn by tens of thousands all around the world. He did this as a labor of love, at no charge to us, of course.  

Alex had a great devotion to the Sacred Heart, and I’m sure many will miss seeing the little Sacred Heart (Vendee) profile picture of Alex Šepkus that always headed up some of the most prescient, humorous, inciteful Catholic commentary on social media.

God bless you, brother.  You inspired your friends to try to be better men, and we’ll never forget you for that.  And now that you know what all of this is really all about, pray for us so that we might hang on and so that we might all meet again happily in heaven one day soon.

In addition to his beloved wife, Dange, he is survived by his son Kristupas, grandson Eduardas and sister Liucija and extended family in Lithuania as well as many dear friends

Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Saturday from 4PM to 7PM and Sunday from 4PM to 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday at 11:00 at St. John Paul, II Church in Sleepy Hollow followed by interment in St. Augustin Cemetery in Ossining.
