Joan Sigmond Obituary

Edna “Joan” Sigmond, 85, a 55 year resident of Oceanport, passed away at home with her daughter by her side, on Sunday, August 29, 2021. Joan was born in Taft, LA to Albert Denis and Edna Marie (Haydel) Robichaux.

Joan had a passion for taking care of others and an infectious sense of humor. She earned her RN from Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA and worked as a nurse in New Orleans and in Los Angeles, CA until she moved to Oceanport in 1966. In 1975 she opened Oceanport Nursery School, where she took joy in teaching and caring for local children. She was always caring for friends and neighbors in need, and opened her doors during the holidays or on any day to people who often had no place to go. Everyone was always welcome in Joan’s home and got to experience her southern hospitality along with her amazing Cajun cooking and her often inappropriate but hilarious sense of humor. She always considered being a mother and a grandmother her most important role. Her family brought her such great happiness. Up to her very last days, she still lit up completely when her children or grandchildren came to her house.

Joan was predeceased by her brothers Albert and Milton Robichaux and in 2016 by her beloved husband of 53 years, Leif Rein Sigmond Sr.

She is survived by her son Leif R. Sigmond Jr. and his wife Laura (Gudicello) Sigmond of Riverwoods, IL, her daughter, Maria Sigmond of Oceanport, her son-in-law, Dennis Warner of Oceanport, grandchildren; Francesca Marie Sigmond, Leif R. Sigmond III, Margaret Joan Sigmond-Warner and Aaron Dennis Sigmond-Warner and her siblings Margaret Elliot of Sylvania, Ohio and David Robichaux of Mexico City, Mexico.

A memorial gathering will be held on Sun., Sept. 5th from 1-4pm at the Braun Funeral Home, 106 Broad St., Eatontown . A Memorial Mass will be offered at Church of the Precious Blood, Monmouth Beach, NJ on Mon., Sept 6th at 10:30am. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Joan’s memory be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
