Phoeba Katherine Mccoy Obituary

Phoeba Katherine Nolen McCoy 1939-2021 Phoeba (Pheobe) McCoy, age 81, of Catlettsburg, KY, went home to be with her Heavenly Father on August 22, 2021. She was born October 27, 1939, to the late Denvil K. Nolen and Edna Leighton McDavid Nolen. She was a 1958 graduate of Ashland High School. She owned and operated McCoy Ceramics and was a Therapy Crafts teacher in the psychiatric unit of Kings Daughters Hospital and Elmwood Village. Pheobe also owned and operated Smart Choice tax services. Pheobe is survived by her husband of 62 years, Thomas "Nick" McCoy, Jr, as well as two loving children, Melissa "Missi" McCoy and her husband Don McKinney from Summerfield, FL; Thomas N. McCoy III and his wife Michelle of Catlettsburg, KY; two sweet grandchildren, Thomas "Billy" McCoy and his wife Hannah; Bradley Joe McCoy and his fiancé Sadonna Ison both of Catlettsburg KY. One Sister Martha Clara Marshall of Ashland, KY. Several Nieces and Nephews; Connie Mills Wooten, Kristin Hope Maggard, Denvil Kim Marshall, Kathy Marshall, Lori Wooten, William K Mills. Pheobe was an active member of Unity Baptist Church for 73 years. There she has served on the finance committee, as well as WMU director. She participated in The Living Christmas Tree, presentations of Judgment House, and taught the ladies Senior Adult Sunday School class. Pheobe enjoyed making and clothing the “Kentucky’s First Ladies in Miniature” since 1984, which can be found on display in the state capitol. Pheobe was named a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Julian Carroll and again by Governor Martha Layne Collins. Appointed by Gov. Martha Layne Collins to the Advisory Council for Community Education and the Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Board; She was reappointed to the boards by ATTY General Fred Cowan. Pheobe was Past chairman and member of the Local Task Force on Missing and Exploited children also was recognized by Gov. Wilkinson for work on the state Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Prevention Board. Pheobe, listed in “Outstanding Young Women of America”, began her Volunteer career in the Ashland Junior Woman’s Club in 1962, where she was named the Outstanding Junior Clubwoman of Kentucky in 1978. She was a member of the General Federation of Women’s Club for 58 years; to the Heritage Woman’s Club for 46 years; and a member of the GFWC “Juanita’s Volunteers” and GFWC Legacy Club. She served GFWC Kentucky as their President from 1982-1984 where her focus was “Committed to Service”. She served on numerous committees in the GFWC including Chairman of the Centennial Celebration. She also served as GFWC Southeastern Region President from 2008-2010. A memorial service in honor of Pheobe will be held at Kilgore and Collier, 2702 Panola Street, Catlettsburg, KY on Thursday August 26 at 7pm. Visitation for friends and family will be at the funeral home from 5pm to 7pm. In Lieu of flowers, the family has asked donations be made to Unity Baptist Church- Missionary Project or Community Hospice of Ashland, KY.
