Thomas C. Moreland Obituary

Thomas Clifford Moreland, 85, of Lakeville, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, after a long illness. Tom was born on November 6, 1935, to W. Bernard Moreland and Frances L. Moreland in Orange, California. Tom grew up living in California and Oregon. He graduated from San Gabriel Mission High School in 1953. Tom went on to study History and Architecture at the University of Oregon. After graduation from the U of O in 1959 Tom served as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He and his wife Dana relocated to Florida, Kansas and then to the Royal Air Force Station in Driffield, England. In 1963 Tom returned his family to Eugene, Oregon, and completed his Bachelor of Architecture degree. An entrepreneur his entire life, Tom was a successful principal/partner of an architectural firm in Eugene, Oregon, while concurrently managing construction management, flight sharing, and real estate development companies. After his architectural career Tom was a known innovator in the signage and lighting industry. He was especially proud to have worked on the LED lighting for Disney Corporation and the St. Nicholas National Shrine in New York City. For the past 22 years Tom lived in Lakeville, Minnesota, with his life partner Tess. They worked together and enjoyed Tom's hobbies as well as continual home remodeling and gardening projects in their Lakeville home. Tom enjoyed woodworking, skiing, sailing, and traveling all over the world. He was also an amazing cook and loved to entertain friends and family with food, drink, and stories from his very interesting life. Tom was preceded in death by his daughter Andrea McGowan of Houston, Texas. He is survived by his life partner Tess Newell of Lakeville, Minnesota; his daughter Kara (David) Uhrich of Vancouver, Washington; his daughter Laura "Lulu" (John) McPhee of Rowayton, Connecticut; and his son Thomas A. "Tony" (Katy Daughn) Moreland of Portland, Oregon. Tom had 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition, Tom had a wonderful relationship with his Minnesota family including Tess's sister Cindy Vance, brother Jim Nielsen, their families, and Tess's son Joe Newell, his wife Kristina, and their two children. He will be truly missed by all that knew him. Many thanks and respect to the medical professionals at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and the caring attention Tom received from Minnesota Hospice.
