Jonathan Block Cohen Obituary

For a brief moment on Monday, August 16th, 2021 the world stopped smiling, as one of the greatest men we have known, Jonathan B. Cohen of Ellington, CT took his last breath at the St. Mary’s Home in West Hartford, CT . Jonathan, 75 was the beloved husband to his wife Linda (Gazdzicki) of 47 happy years. Jon or “Jody” as his family called him was Born May 15, 1946 in Hartford, CT.  As the first born son to the late David and Dorothy (Block) Cohen, Jody was full of smiles and laughter.  In 1949 Dave and Dorothy moved their family out to Ellington where the Cohen’s farm began in 1915. Dave and Dorothy decided to start a family chicken business, where Jon was shown the hard work of farming but was always willing to help out.  Proud of his family's farming history, Jon continued to help, including driving tractor during tobacco season. Jon graduated from Ellington High School in 1964 and shortly thereafter he began his service to our Country in the U.S. Army, voluntarily donating his O negative blood to save many lives.  In 1974, Jon married his beautiful wife, Linda and started their family. Jon owned and operated his own company, J B Cohen Trucking, as well as worked for a number of companies over his career including Manchester Sand and Gravel, Tilcon/Roncari, Earthgro and Herb Holden Trucking, finally retiring in 2010. Jon was a very proud US Veteran and served on the Town of Ellington's Patriotic Committee. His true passion and days of enjoyment were spent driving and working on his 1927 American LaFrance Doodlebug. Jon was a lifetime member of the New England Doodlebug Association and was a mentor full of history and knowledge to many. In addition to his wife Linda, he is survived by his daughter Rebecca and beloved son in law Mark of Ellington, his son Seth and his wife Nicole of Bristol, his daughter, Laura Beth of Ellington and step son David Miller of East Windsor.  As an incredibly proud Papa, he also leaves his loving grandchildren, Anna Grace and Samuel Jonathan Einsiedel.  Jon is also survived by his siblings Sanford Cohen and wife Sydney, Harris Cohen and wife Louise all of Ellington; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, whom he adored. He also leaves his cherished furry friends Boo and Stanley. We are eternally grateful to the nurses and staff of St. Mary's Home in the Fitzgerald Unit for the exceptional care given to Jon in his final weeks of life. We have cried our tears and mourn our loss, Jon reminded us that every day is a new opportunity to choose joy, despite sorrow and show kindness to all. Leave your sadness at the door, but bring rather your stories, your laughs and your memories of a wonderful man who left such an impact on us all.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 20th at 11:00 am in the Ellington Cemetery with remembrances and reception to immediately follow at the Cohen home. Memorial donations in his memory can be made to the CT Humane Society or to St. Mary's Home Fitzgerald Unit, West Hartford CT.  To sign the online guest book or watch the live stream of the service please visit www.blumensteinfunerals.com
