Jack Farrell Morris of Rolla, MO, died 11 August 2021 at age 93 from complications of congestive heart failure. He was in hospice care at home. He was born 17 September 1927, in Cincinnati, OH, to Sherman Osgood Morris and Dorothee Lucille (Farrell) Morris. He has one younger sister, Nancy. Jack attended high school at Todd School for Boys in Woodstock, IL. Shortly after turning 18, he was drafted into the Army, where he was trained as a tabulating machine operator at Wright Field near Dayton, OH. It was there he met his future wife, Frances Mae Smith. Jack and Fran were married in Imperial, NE, on 13 June 1948. After living in Chicago briefly, they moved to Broken Arrow, OK, where Jack trained to be an aircraft engine mechanic. Eventually, he was employed by Boeing in Wichita, KS, where he worked as a mechanic, flight test engineer, and trainer. His second-shift job enabled him to attend the University of Wichita, where he obtained a BS degree in Electrical Engineering. Following graduation, he accepted a teaching position at the Missouri School of Mines in Rolla, MO, where he was also enrolled in graduate school. Jack graduated with an MSEE degree in 1965. Though circumstances denied him a PhD, he enjoyed a 40- year career with the university now called MS&T, and retired as an Associate Professor. Jack was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He was occasionally engaged as an expert witness in court cases involving electrical power distribution, and he provided consulting services for universities in Central America, Africa, and Saudi Arabia. Jack enjoyed working with his hands, as a mechanic, woodworking, and on home-improvement projects. He was a good cook and enjoyed cooking for visiting family. He also enjoyed float trips on any of southern Missouri’s scenic rivers. Jack read voraciously, preferring realistic fiction or military historical fiction. He was baptized in the faith, was active in and steadfastly supported his church. He lived his faith every day by being a faithful husband for more than 67 years and teaching the next generations for more than 40 years. He employed homeless and transients on occasion, paying a fair wage to help them on their way for as long as they wanted. He gave scholarships not only to university students through the system, but helped one of his unskilled rental unit workers become a registered nurse and be able to embark on a better life than she had when she started working with him. He did service for many years on church committees, delivered Mobile Meals with Fran, served the city on the planning and zoning committee, and supervised AARP free tax preparation services. He loved to build things: he worked for Habitat for Humanity, designed and built two homes, two apartment buildings, and rehabbed many houses and duplexes in the city. Jack is survived by his sister Nancy Raihala; two children and their spouses, Larry and Susan Morris, and Jerri and Jim Butts; four grandchildren, Christa Dennis (Bill), Brian Butts (Mary), Karen Morris, and Greg Morris (Adrienne); four great-grandchildren, Meredith Dennis, Eli Butts, Norah Dennis, and Braeden Butts; two nephews, Kevin and Keith Raihala; niece Karleen Raihala; and his sister-in-law Lois Peterson. Jack was predeceased by his mother Dorothee (1983), his wife Fran (2016), and his brother-in-law Stanley Smith (1996). Jack always gave a leg up wherever he could. A memorial service honoring his life will be held at 2 pm Saturday, August 21, 2021 at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla. A visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the service beginning at 1 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to O.A.T (Ozark Actors Theatre) or FUMC (First United Methodist Church).
