John Johnson Coursen

John Johnson Coursen, 59, passed away peacefully at home on August 5, 2021 after a courageous battle with aggressive brain cancer. His loving wife, Jill, was by his side. John was born in Appleton, Wisconsin. He was the son of Mignon R. and the late Bradner W. Coursen. John grew up in Williamsburg, Virginia where he attended Lafayette High School. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1984 with a degree in Biochemistry. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. A planner by nature, John believed that dreams could be made reality with planning and dedication. After a career in Biotechnology Business Development, he reinvented himself to follow his dreams including becoming a ski patroller in Utah and a Certified Wine Specialist and Sommelier. John and Jill recently returned to Frederick, Maryland, the city where they were married and created their first home together. John will be remembered for being adventurous, outgoing, and full of laughter. He collected friends easily wherever he went in the world. He was an avid skier, sailor, runner, and a fabulous cook. Wine, food, and friends were his passions and he loved to entertain to bring the three together. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Jill Coursen; mother Mignon Coursen; brother Bradner Coursen Jr. and his wife Lizanne Coursen; and brother Scott Coursen and his wife Mary Coursen. He is also survived by 5 nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
