Ingrid Gordon Rockville, Maryland Obituary

Ingrid Gordon

Ingrid Stern Gordon was born August 31, 1930, in Hamburg, Germany, the youngest child and only daughter of Walter and Ilse Stern. She spent her early years in Hamburg. Her father, recognizing the need for Jews to escape the Nazi regime, moved to England. He sent for Ingrid and her brother Kenneth, who were able to flee Germany in early 1939 just before the Holocaust and the Second World War. She spent her formative years in England, attending Brampton Down boarding school in Folkestone, Kent and near Taunton, Somerset, and even becoming Head Girl at her school in 1947. After the war, she enjoyed spending time with her stepmother Gerda Stern. She came to the United States for a six-month visit in 1953 and never left. It must be said that even though she spent the rest of her life in the U.S., she always considered herself British. She moved to Washington, DC in 1954, first working for the Embassy of Pakistan and then for the International Monetary Fund, or, as it was known by many, the Impossible Mission Fund. She met her future husband, Harold Gordon, in an economics class at George Washington University. They married on March 17, 1957. Over the next few years, she worked to put her husband through law school. When not working, she was the navigator and Harold the driver of their MGA in sports car rallies, winning a number of them. They had three children: Marc, Gillian, and David. Always interested in politics, she became a Democratic Party activist in the 1960s, working for Hubert Humphrey and later assisting behind the scenes at the 1972 Democratic National Convention. In addition to raising her children, she became an avid tennis player and a devoted aficionado of Jane Austen. In the 1980s, she completed a degree at American University. She and Harold traveled the world, especially enjoying cruising the Mediterranean. She visited family and friends in England on annual trips "home" until her final years. She spent her last eight years at Ingleside at King Farm enjoying the camaraderie, social life, and activities. She is survived by her three children and their spouses and loved ones (David and Lysbeth, Gillian and Todd, Marc and Lee, three grandchildren (Alexandra, Kira, and Trevor), her elder brother Kenneth, her nieces Melanie and Robin, and extended family.
