William M. Whitney Obituary

William "Billy" Montague Whitney was born on September 17, 1923 in Denver, Colorado. He was the 4th child of John J. and Maggie B. Johnson Whitney. His parents and siblings, John Jr., Jewel, and Imogene all preceded him in death. Billy attended Denver Public Schools and graduated from Manual Training School. Billy was drafted in the U.S. Army and was a member of the 10th Calvary Military Band at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he was honorably discharged in 1945. He worked at Stapleton and Denver International Airports for more than 55 years, retiring from Continental Airlines in 1992. He received employee of the month several times. He was a life-long member of Cleaves Memorial CME Church where he served as the chairman of the Steward Board for more than ten years. He also served in other capacities including vice chair of finance and played the saxophone into his 80's. He was a surrogate father to his niece and nephews who grew up in the family home on High street, and fondly called "Uncle Billy" by many who knew him. Billy was active in his community through various masonic and philanthropic organizations. He was a life-long member of Syrian Temple No. 49, Rocky Mountain Lodge # 1, and a member of the Mountain & Plains Consistory # 33. Billy was called home by the Lord Friday, April 15, 2016. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 54 years, Freddie Corene Whitney, son William Gregory (Maureen) of Las Vegas, Nevada, daughter Marilyn (Larry Bernard) of Pine Bluff, Arkansas and son Terry (Jolene) of Denver, Colorado. Daughter Marcia Ann (Hank) Whitney passed on to heaven in August 2015. Grandchildren include Anthony (Ernestina) Whitney of Apopka, Florida, Marie Mason of Aurora, Colorado, Juneka Whitney of Denver, Colorado, Jamarr Whitney of Las Vegas, Nevada, LaMont King of Lorraine, Ohio, Miranda Whitney of Denver, Colorado and Amelia Whitney of Denver, Colorado; 7 great grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives.
