Hazel Lorraine (Spence) Hewitt, 97, of Middletown, wife of the late George P. Hewitt, passed away on December 24, 2016 in Florida. Born in Manhattan, NY, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Beryl (Phyfer) Spence. Hazel grew up in New York where she was very active in the American Negro Ballet Company and the YMCA. She lived in Middletown most of her adult life and was a member of Cross Street A.M.E. Zion Church. She was a member of Salvation Army in Middletown and of the Cromwell, Middletown and Portland Senior Centers. Hazel also enjoyed gardening and travel. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, Suzanne Spence Brown of Orlando, FL, Marcella Coleman of Orlando, FL, Maarten Terry of New Canaan, Mark (Alita) Terry of NY, Roslyn Greene of CO, Alice Heyliger of Powhatan, VA, Debra (Fisher), Victoria Spence, of Powhatan, VA, and Elaine (Mark) Hopson of VA and Dr. Lynn Richardson of NY along with Grandchildren, James (Phedre) Brown III of Orlando FL, Melissa (Landus) Hall of Dumfries, VA, and Nishelle (Anthony) Mays of DeBary, FL and several great grands. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 11:00 am at Cross Street A.M.E. Zion Church in Middletown. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
