Jan Norbert Mooney, beloved husband of Gloria (Kawecki) Mooney, left us quietly at Hartford Hospital, on July 21, 2021, after a long and brave battle with cancer.

He was born in Littleton, NH to Everett and Yvonne Mooney, on June 10, 1947. He attended St. Rose of Lima school and Littleton High School. After attending Plymouth State College, Jan moved to the Hartford area where he worked for the Kaman Corporation and took computer programming classes at night. Excelling in the discipline, he enjoyed a successful career working in the IT and business departments of several major insurance companies, including Travelers, Aetna and The Hartford.  He also formed his own company and worked as an independent contractor. Jan’s constant good nature, business and technical acumen, and willingness to share what he knew, drew people to him as a natural leader and a friend. “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”.

Travel was a passion and he enjoyed interacting with the locals in very country he visited, whether it was chatting and eating pistachios with men playing backgammon by a roadside fruit stand in Turkey, joking about politics with the butchers in the Athens public market or getting behind the bar and teaching a London bartender how to make a Mudslide.  His favorite souvenir was the memory of a sunny afternoon hour spent sipping a peach Bellini in the piazza San Marco while he listened to the orchestra with his wife. Jan was a history buff and to call him an American Civil War enthusiast is an understatement. He consumed every book on the subject and knew the details of every campaign. During visits to numerous historic sites, his somber accounts of the details of each battle could transport you back to the event. Jan was also an avid sports fan. He played football and basketball in high school and later coached softball.  With an encyclopedic knowledge of football and baseball history, players and stats, it seemed there was no question he couldn't answer. He was a lifelong fan of the NY Giants and the Boston Red Sox.

Besides his loving wife of 29 years, Jan leaves his children Melissa Perry, Michael Mooney, Megan Mooney and several grandchildren. We will all dearly miss his warmth, his love, his sense of humor and his smile. Jan also leaves a brother, Darrell Mooney. The family wishes to thank the Nursing staff at both Hartford and Windham hospitals for the warmhearted care and compassion shown over the past months.

There are no calling hours. A private graveside service, at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, will be held at the convenience of the family. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated in his honor at St. Matthews Church in Tolland on August 15 at 10:30 AM.  In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the animal shelter of your choice will still warm his heart.
