James Phelps Mintz

MADISON - The world lost a kind soul when James Phelps “Jim” Mintz, age 92, of Madison, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Friday, July 23, 2021. He was born on Nov. 4, 1928, in Milwaukee, the son of Louis and Helen (Phelps) Mintz. Jim graduated from Milwaukee Washington High School and promptly joined the U.S. Navy, after which he attended UW-Madison, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. While attending UW, he met the love of his life, Carol Lasch, and they were united in marriage on June 16, 1951, in New London, Wis. They recently celebrated 70 years of marriage. Following graduation, Jim began his longtime career for American Family Insurance, beginning when it was Farmers Mutual Insurance Company, and retiring in 1993. Jim was an active longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Wisconsin Alumni Association, and a member of Cherokee Country Club since 1975. He was very involved in the American Red Cross blood donation program. Jim enjoyed golfing, playing softball, bowling and was a Badgers season ticket holder even during the losing seasons of Coatta and Morton! He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Carol, including Australia and Fiji. Jim took much pride in being a part of the Badger Honor Flight in 2012. Jim is survived by his wife of 70 years, Carol; children, Steven Mintz, Karen (Dave) Noreen and James (Carole) Mintz; grandchildren, Erin (Monty) Peterson, Eric Noreen, Jason (Melinda) Mintz and Ryan Mintz; and great-grandchildren, Connor Peterson, Audrey Peterson and Charlotte Mintz. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Jeannette Mintz. A memorial service will be held at IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1021 Spaight Street, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 26, 2021. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday. Memorial contributions may be gifted in Jim’s name to Immanuel Lutheran Church or to the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
