Mrs. Miriam Callis Bumgarner, 98, widow of Reverend George William Bumgarner, died July 23, 2021 at Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem.. She was born September 29, 1922 in Bessemer City, NC, to Burton Edward and Alice Ann Cartwright Callis. She graduated from Brevard College and Greensboro College in 1943 with a Batchelor of Arts degree. She began her work as Director of Christian Education at First Methodist Church, Hickory, and continued her interest in church work when she was married in 1946 to Rev. Bumgarner. Throughout their ministry in the United Methodist Church she was active in the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Bumgarner was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. Survivors include her son, Burton and wife, Cathy of Hendersonville; daughter, Alice of Winston-Salem; and grandchildren, Sarah Wingo (Derik) of Brooklyn, New York and grandson Andrew (Hbon Ksor). of Portland, Oregon. Preceded in death by her twin sister, Marian Funderburk, and sisters, Lillian Ritchie, Elizabeth Davis and brother Burton Edward Jr. Mrs. Bumgarner has resided at Arbor Acres since 1997. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, at 10:00 a.m in Piner Hall at Arbor Acres, with Rev. Laura Lee Jones officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Millers Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery at the Outreach Center 4705 Boone Trail, Millers Creek, Wilkes County.
