Mary M Horstman Obituary

Mary Magdalene Horstman, 83, of Newton died on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at The Cottages in Pella. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 26, 2021, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, July 25, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.  Memorials to the Jasper County Senior Citizens may be left at the funeral home or the church the morning of the service.

Mary, the daughter of Leslie and Violet (McNeer) Quinn, was born on September 9, 1937 in St. Mary’s Iowa.  She grew up in Colfax and graduated from Colfax High School in 1956.  She then moved to Newton.  On April 30, 1971, Mary was united in marriage with Conrad Horstman.  They made their home in rural Monroe.  Mary was a homemaker raising their three children: Kelly, Kevin, and Meggan.  She also was busy doing ceramics, gardening, baking, cooking, and sewing.  Following Conrad’s death in 1983, Mary and the kids moved back to Newton. Mary’s Catholic faith was always a consistent comfort to her. She was very active at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she raised her children and attended Mary Martha Circle.

After her children were older, Mary returned to work and worked at Diamond Crystal and Warren’s Frozen Food, where she would retire from.  After retirement, she worked part-time in the fabrics department at Wal-Mart. In her 60s, Mary selflessly donated a kidney to her good friend, Jane Tuffin, extending her life another ten years.  Mary enjoyed spending time at the Jasper County Senior Citizens Center. She was also very proud of her Irish heritage.

Those left to honor Mary’s memory are her children, Kelly (Eric) Wallace of Sully, Kevin Horstman of Newton, and Meggan (Ed) Machin of Newton; grandchildren, Todd (Samantha), Matthew, and Katie Wallace, Kacie, Sclena, Hannah, Holly, and Leo Horstman, and Ethan and Ella Machin; her great-grandchildren, Zepleighn, Anna, Henry, and Joselynn; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Conrad Horstman; and her 9 siblings, Leslie Jr. Quinn, LeRoy Quinn, Merle Quinn, Tom Quinn, Harry Quinn, Boneta (Quinn) Davidson, John Quinn, Marilyn (Quinn) Dietrich, and Thelma Quinn.
