Betty Wix Mehaffie

Betty Wix Mehaffie, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and sister, 98, of Mechanicsburg (formerly of Susquehanna Township) passed away on July 21, 2021, at Messiah Lifeways at Messiah Village where she had been a resident for the past three years. She was married to Walter L. Mehaffie, her high school sweetheart, for 69 years before his passing in 2012. She was born on April 12, 1923, the daughter of the late Harry C. Wix and Bertha (Maeyer) Wix. Betty graduated from Susquehanna Township High School in the Class of 1940. While in high school, Betty was class secretary, carried the banner in the band, danced in the operettas, and was a member of the National Honor Society. During World War II Betty was trained by and worked for the American Red Cross. Betty worked as a high school secretary for the Susquehanna Township School District before her retirement in 1983. After retirement she worked as a volunteer for Indian Wheels. Betty enjoyed her family immensely and, up until the age of 93, cooked all of the holiday meals for 23 family members. Betty also enjoyed spending time at their second home in Rehoboth Beach for many years. Over the years other interests of Betty's included dancing with her husband especially the jitterbug, card club, reading, bowling, crabbing, mall walking with friends at the Colonial Park Shopping Center, working on her yard, playing Scrabble, playing card games with her great grandchildren, helping Walt with income taxes, volunteering in her church office, calling and checking in on homebound people from her church and organizing and getting together with STHS Alums. She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, the Pennsylvania Association for School Retirees, PSERS, and the Susquehanna Township Alumni Association. She is survived by her three children: W. Douglas (Bonnie Hume) Mehaffie of Harrisburg, Pamela (Dennis) Dunn of Boalsburg, PA, and Janet Mehaffie of Mechanicsburg; her grandchildren: Kim (Gregory) Day of Hummelstown, Dana Bradley) Schreiber of Harrisburg, Angela Foreman of Arlington, VA. and Erin Brown of Harrisburg; her great grandchildren: Nathan Day, Paige Day, Aiden Schreiber, Ryan Schreiber, Kassen Foreman, Ethan Foreman, Reece Brown and Sage Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Betty was preceded in death by her brothers James and Ross, her sisters Martha Ulrich, Bertha Coyle, Dorothy Clouser, and Jean Wix and her great-grandson James Chase Foreman. Her family would like to thank the staff of Messiah Lifeways at Messiah Village for the excellent care and kindness they showed Betty during her three year stay. Visitation will be held at the Jesse H. Geigle Funeral Home on July 31, 2021, 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. with services to immediately follow. Inurnment will be private for the family at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Betty's memory to The Building Fund of Calvary United Methodist Church, 4700 Locust Lane, Harrisburg, PA., 17109, or the Bethesda Mission, PO Box 3041, Harrisburg, PA., 17105.
