Marie Sandra Tufaro Obituary

Marie Sandra Tufaro, 83, of Princeton died Wednesday, July 21, 2021, in East Brunswick with family by her side. A loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, Marie was born in Newark and raised in East Orange. She also lived in Metuchen – where she graduated from the borough’s high school in 1956 – Edison and Jackson. A devout Roman Catholic whose unwavering faith enabled her to navigate life’s challenges without ever questioning God’s plan, Marie was a former communicant at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral, Metuchen and St. Helena Church, Edison. Marie bravely persevered through inordinate medical ailments that required multiple surgeries and hospitalizations. She never complained about her condition, selflessly put the needs and concerns of others before her own, and unequivocally remains the most mentally tough person her family and friends have ever known. Marie was predeceased by her husband, Joseph S. Tufaro Sr., who proudly served his country as a U.S. Navy veteran, and granddaughter Marisa Rose Tufaro, who succumbed to cancer at the age of 13 following a heart transplant. Marie is survived by her brother, Modesto Milo; two sons, Joseph S. Tufaro Jr. and his wife Lorraine of Philadelphia, and Gregory A. Tufaro and his wife Cynthia of Edison. Happily married for 46 years, Marie and Joseph were among the first couples wed in what is the current St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral, Metuchen. They were joined in holy matrimony June 1, 1963, a dozen days after the cathedral was blessed and dedicated. Marie and Joseph, who valiantly lived with his own myriad health issues, shared an ineffable bond. Their marriage was exemplary, capturing the quintessence of true love through the fulfilment of traditional wedding vows: for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health. A meticulous homemaker with an unparalleled work ethic, Marie had an extensive employment career, which was interrupted for several years while she raised her children as a dedicated stay-at-home mom. After graduating high school, Marie started working at a department store alongside her own loving mother, Elan, who was her best friend. Marie went on to work at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, Imperial Deli and Liquors in South Plainfield and the Metuchen Deli and Liquor Store in Metuchen before becoming an administrative assistant for Consumer Food Services in East Brunswick. She retired after being employed as a secretary at Hoechst Celanese in Basking Ridge and Midlantic Corporation in Edison. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral, Metuchen. Inurnment at Hillside Cemetery, Metuchen will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider performing a random act of kindness in Marie’s loving memory.
