Stephen John Rees Obituary

Stephen Rees, born 8th April 1940 passed away in the USA peacefully in the care of a wonderful hospice team on Thursday 22nd July. John and Helen were by his side. He had been suffering for several months with Cancer. There will be a cremation in the USA, followed by a memorial celebration and intimate gathering in a few weeks (date to be decided). His ashes will be repatriated to Buckhurst Hill , Essex, England to be alongside Mum as soon as it is reasonably possible. When Rees family Australia and Rees family USA can travel Covid-safe we will gather as friends and family in our family birth place of Buckhurst Hill to celebrate his life as sons, husband, father, grandad, uncle, friend and colleague with his dearest UK friends. We ask for no flowers at this time. If resident in UK please feel welcome to donate to Sue Ryder Hospice in Leckhampton. If in Australia just open a tinnie and raise a glass. He liked a good G & T. To anyone over here in USA who Gramps made smile, please consider a donation to Serenity House We cannot imagine a better process of hospice care than what we experienced together the last 3 weeks, and I now believe there are angels on earth. http://www.carolinacomfortcoalition.org Rob and I hope that Dad is now hugging Mum tight again. Not a perfect man by any means, he was a charmer, funny, generous and inspired me to travel that's for sure. Heck he dragged me on to Cunard's Queen Elizabeth when I was 3 1/2! He loved his family, Arsenal Football Club, New York City and watching any sport on TV including snooker and tiddlywinks. He was brilliant at crosswords. He had a certain fondness for sausages and donuts. His last "lively" day was watching England in the final of the Euros around 10 days ago, which brought memories and stories galore back of the World Cup Final in 1966. Apparently, my nappy did not get changed from kick-off all the way through extra time. Dad/Gramps/Greasey Reesy, we will miss you and I know that I was extremely lucky to experience the last years of your life up close and personal. Love to all, John and Robert Rees
