Sherry Hite Rhodes Obituary

Sherry Anne Hite Rhodes, age 79, went home to her Savior on July 18, 2021, in El Dorado Hills, California. Born on October 27, 1941, in Blue Island, Illinois to Jim and Opal Hite, Sherry grew up on a hobby farm in Warsaw, Indiana, where she helped milk the cows, feed the pigs and harvest vegetables from a vast garden. She was the valedictorian of her Leesburg High School class and attended nursing school at Parkview Methodist, graduating in 1963. She worked as a night nurse in the ICU at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana, providing compassionate care to all her patients. Sherry met her husband Nat on a blind date set up by her roommate in 1963 and they were married on May 2, 1964. The young couple moved to Schenectady, New York where Sherry worked as a medical/surgical nurse at Ellis Hospital and Nat worked for G.E. In 1965 Sherry and Nat moved to Phoenix, Arizona where they lived for nearly 50 years. When their firstborn son Phil arrived Sherry changed careers to full-time mom and wife. While raising their three children, Sherry was always very involved in church ministry, church choir, women’s Bible studies and attending the various school and sports activities of Phil, Brad and Julie. In addition, Sherry attended Western Seminary to study counseling and, over several decades, ministered to more people than we can count. Many of them called her “Mom” and in turn, she became a bonus grandma to many of their kids. What began as a volunteer role with Crisis Pregnancy Center in Phoenix, eventually led to a full-time job in various roles, including a program director. In her fifties, Sherry went back to school to regain her nursing license, in part so she could participate in medical mission trips that took her to Kenya several times and Nicaragua, El Salvador, India and China. Nat accompanied her on several of these trips and they also both helped with Samaritan’s Purse disaster relief efforts during the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fires in Yarnell, Arizona. With her newly reinstated nursing license, Sherry worked at John C. Lincoln hospital for a short time and then spent several years as the school nurse at Camelback High School before finally retiring. Sherry and Nat loved to travel, whether internationally to see the sights, or to visit family and friends around the U.S. In 2014 they moved to the Sacramento area to be close to Phil’s family. Sherry loved attending the grandkid’s swim meets and celebrating holidays with family. In 2019, Sherry and Nat completed training and became chaplains through Sunrise Community Church. Those that know and love Sherry will attest that she radiated the fruits of the spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control. Sherry loved her family well and prayed fervently for them every day. She gave selflessly every day to take care of those around her. Sherry is preceded in death by their son Philip James Rhodes. She is survived by her husband Nathaniel Holman Rhodes; son Brad Rhodes and wife Suzanne; daughter Julie Gumm and husband Mark; daughter-in-law Tricia Rhodes; brother Ted Hite and wife Elaine; and eight grandchildren — Luke, Noah, Beza, Natalie, Grace, Julia, Rion and Olivia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kenya Medical Missions (10125 E. Doubletree Ranch Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85258).
