Elizabeth B. Street Augusta, Maine Obituary

Elizabeth B. Street

AUGUSTA---Elizabeth (Libby) Buchan Street, 87, of Chelsea passed away Sunday July 18, 2021 at Maine General Long-term Care Glenridge. Born on March 3, 1934 in Manhattan, NY to Catherine Shaw Buchan and James Buchan. Libby married Wixon Street after they studied Agriculture at the University of Connecticut. They settled in Chelsea on Ledgerock Farm raising Angus cows and chickens. She also owned, rode, and showed horses as she grew up, in college, and on the farm. She also had many much-loved dogs and cats. Later, Libby received her degree in Agriculture from UMO. In lean times, she worked for DHS in Child Protective; worked for Chelsea School, mainly in the library; drove a school bus for Chelsea School; worked as a veterinarian's assistant; worked in real estate selling houses; and worked in various restaurants in the Augusta area. After divorce, Libby worked for Seton Hospital on the detox then as a mental health worker at Augusta General. She helped in getting drug and alcohol treatment set up in Maine. Libby received a master's degree from the USM, which allowed her to become a counselor and social worker. She worked tirelessly helping in the recovery community. She worked as Employees Assistance specialist for the State of Maine. She had a love for those who had problems and guided them to real solutions. In her later years, she lived on Togus Pond in the house she designed and had built where she loved to cross country ski, swim, and garden. A while later, she was hired by DHHS to work in the Adult Protective unit. As she looked toward retirement, she built a house in Chelsea where she planned, set up, and ran Chelsea Gardens. Several summers before she retired, she advertised and sold daylilies directly. Later, she continued Chelsea Gardens as a virtual daylily business. As a child Libby went to many different schools as her father moved from job to job around the country. She loved to travel and filled more than a few scrapbooks with wonderful memories. Some of her destinations were California, Mexico, Alaska, England, Scotland, France, and Holland. Libby was pre-deceased by her daughter, Catherine Hinds, her ex-husband Wixon Street, and parents. She is survived by grandsons, Daniel Hinds and Samuel Hinds, cousin Mary Street, and several great grandsons. We extend many thanks to Maine General for Libby's care. A Memorial Gathering will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday July 28, 2021 from 4-6pm.
