James Robert Mullins Obituary

James Robert Mullins

June 18, 1944 - July 7, 2021

James (Jim) was born on June 18, 1944 in Canon City at his grandparents’ house, to R.Dwight Mullins and Nel-lee DeVivier Mullins.

Jim’s early years were lived in Canon City, where he enjoyed fishing in the creek with his older brother Jack, helping pick fruit in his grandfather’s orchards, and playing with his cousins. He started grade school at McKinley Elementary, but the Mullins family moved to Colorado Springs in the 1950s. Jim graduated from Palmer High School in 1964.  Jim spent many happy summers in his youth, helping on his family’s farms in the San Louis Valley.

Jim claimed his favorite job was being a gunfighter at Buckskin Joe’s because he met his future wife, Corinne Dunn, while they both worked at the Western town. Jim also worked many years for his father’s business, the Mullins Feed Store.  Jim and Corinne were married on February 28, 1965. They welcomed their daughter Julie in 1966. The new Mullins family soon moved to Colorado Springs, where Jim worked as a Journeyman Plumber.  In 1972, they moved back to Canon City in the home that Jim and his father built. In 1975, the Mullins family welcomed their son Jeff.

Jim was a hard worker and worked for the DOC for 25+ years. He started at Old Max and later was instrumental in helping to open the Centennial Correctional Facility. He was the Physical Plant Manager there until his retirement.

The outdoors was a huge draw for Jim and Corinne. They were avid bowhunters and took their family hunting and camping every fall. Jim loved fishing and spending time in the mountains. He also enjoyed arrowhead hunting, rock hounding, and gold panning.  Jim was a life member of the Elks, the Colorado Bowhunters Association, and the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society. He was also a SE Area Representative for the CBA. Jim and Corinne also loved hunting and visiting in Arizona and went there many years. Some of Jim’s other interests were going to Hot Rod car shows, working on his Model T, making turquoise and silver jewelry, and supporting his son Jeff in all his sports games. Jim was a huge Colorado Rockies and Avalanche fan and enjoyed watching college football and baseball.

Jim became a Christian in the late 1970s and was a changed man afterwards. He strove to be strong in his faith to be a positive influence on people. In his last years, Jim delighted in calling in birthdays to KRLN’s morning show and sending cheerful messages on his phone to family and friends. Jim liked his emojis.

Jim is survived by his two children; Julie (Craig) Youngren, and Jeff (Sandy) Mullins; and his greatest treasure of all, his granddaughter Brooke Lorraine Mullins.  Jim is also survived by his brothers-in-law; James (Debbie) Dunn, Bill (Dee) Dunn, Dennis Meese, and Richard Linsenmann, nephew; Scott Mullins, niece; Mendy (Travis) Coffee, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years Corinne, his parents; R.Dwight and Nel-lee Mullins his brother; Jack Mullins, his niece; Michelle Mullins, his father and mother-in-law; Carm and Lorraine Dunn, and sisters-in-law; Carol Meese and Nancy Linsenmann.
