Christine Norman Obituary

Christine Sparkman was born May 31, 1927 in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Harvey and Martha Sparkman. Very quietly and peacefully on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, the Almighty God in his infinite wisdom, gently closed her eyes to return home to be with her Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. At an early age Christine was baptized; receiving Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. Christine one of twelve children; 7 brothers and 4 sisters was educated in the Virginia Public School System. After graduating she migrated to Philadelphia, PA where she married the late Joseph L. Norman. From this union, one child was born, Babette L. Norman. She also raised a niece Diane Marshall as her daughter and Shawn Drummond as her son along with Irving Adams. Christine was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as a surrogate mother to Eric, Genesis, Angelica, Emmanuel & Keisha. She had a vivacious personality and always made people around her laugh. Christine joined Holy Temple Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Bishop O.T. Jones. She was a very active member who served as a missionary and who supported other auxiliaries. She started a food pantry and clothing drive at the church which expanded to her community; handing out items from her porch. She did what she loved best; serving God and encouraging others as she would help put a smile on their faces. Christine briefly worked at William Rifkin & Sons manufacturing company as a seamstress. She later pursued a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) through her employment with the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, where she was employed for thirty years in the emergency department. Christine brought all those loving and caring qualities to her neighborhood. She was a community advocate, original board member in 1977 to Parkside Association of Philadelphia and a Block Captain, making sure her block was cleaned and well groomed. Her life was a living example of the Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32- "And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ." Mrs. Christine Norman has touched the lives of many in her lifetime. She is preceded in death by her parents Harvey and Martha Sparkman; seven brothers, Robert; Harvey; George; Willie; Arthur; and a set of twins; two sisters, Mary Anderson, and Edna Washington. She leaves to cherish in her loving memory her children Babette L. Norman & friend Mary Izzard, Diane Marshall, Shawn Drummond; Step son Irving Adams (Blake); Five bonus children Eric, Genesis, Angelica, Emanuel and Keisha; One sister, Cathy D. Fonville; three grandsons; Tony Spragley, Tyler Marshall (Charlene), Saleem Drummond; One granddaughter Maica Drummond; two great grandchildren, Talliyah and Tyyana and a host of nieces and nephews, family and friends.
