Jane Howell Obituary

M. (Maria) Jane Howell (nee Furness) passed away peacefully on July 10, 2021 at the age of 85. Predeceased by her devoted husband Brian of 55 years. She was a loving mother of Bob (Janet), David, and Cathy. Much loved Grandma of Hayley, Ryan, Meghan, Hannah, Micah, Charlotte, Annabelle and Penelope. Dear sister of Alex and Nancy Furness. Will be missed by many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Jane was born in north Toronto to E. Ella (Sally) Furness (nee Selman), and George Winston Churchill Furness. She was active and athletic throughout much of her life. She attended the University of Toronto where she competed in downhill skiing and was an intercollegiate diving champion. She graduated with a degree in Physical and Occupational Therapy (PNOT), a program where she developed many lifelong friendships. Jane also loved adventure and after graduation traveled to Europe on multiple occasions for both work and pleasure. On a voyage home from one of those adventures, she met a young Brit named Brian traveling to see his sisters in America on the Queen Elizabeth 2. She had a strong independent spirit. Jane worked throughout much of her life as a home care physiotherapist spending countless hours working with and developing relationships with numerous patients she cared for. She and Brian settled in Islington after they were married, where they lived and worked for their entire lives. Early in their life in Etobicoke, Jane and Brian joined and ultimately became lifelong members of the Islington United Church, participating in numerous groups. Jane was a founder of the Islington Day Club, a group dedicated to individuals who were physically challenged, including stroke and neurological recovery and rehabilitation. In 2013 she was awarded the order of Islington as a recognition of her service, including the day club. Growing up as a child she had the privilege of experiencing Geneva Park. The hook was clearly set early as she later joined as summer staff working at the swim dock. She brought her children to “Cooch” to enjoy the same experience and later her grandchildren to continue the legacy. In the mid 70’s Jane and Brian purchased a cottage in Honey Harbour where they made many friends and enjoyed numerous summers with their kids and grandkids. In retirement Jane spent countless hours with a wonderful group of quilters at Neilson Park. After Brian’s death, she moved into Humber Heights retirement community where she continued to make new friends even as her health deteriorated. Family and friends were fortunate to be able to spend time with Jane as she passed. Donations to the Alzheimer’s society (https://alzheimer.ca/en/take-action/donate) would be gratefully appreciated. Cremation has taken place. Celebration of life service planned at Islington United Church. Date to be determined. www.ridleyfuneralhome.com
